Life always has its ups and downs, and Ban Hee Jin (Roh Jeong Eui) is learning just that in the latest episodes of “Crushology 101.” While the ship of her love with Hwan Jae Yeol (Lee Chae Min) has finally sailed, some other aspects of her life seem to be ready to sink and hit rock bottom. As this story is getting ready to wrap up, here are all the things that were full of sweetness for our female lead but ultimately left her with a bitter taste.
Warning: spoilers from episodes 9-10 ahead!
1. Distancing herself from Cha Ji Won
One of the hardest things to watch in these couple of episodes is Ban Hee Jin’s (nicknamed Bunny) decision to put an end to her close friendship with Cha Ji Won (Cho Jun Young) after weird rumors about them begin to spread. Her confusing relationship ends up enraging her ex-boyfriend, who retaliates against her. Although it doesn’t escalate too much, it creates more misunderstandings that ultimately hurt her relationship with Jae Yeol.
In a sense, the fact that Bunny chooses her relationship over her friendship goes quite according to her personality and how much she values her love. Nonetheless, it is still disappointing that she can’t take a firm stand when it comes to her own boundaries. The most heartbreaking thing is that Ji Won has no other choice but to accept it and let go of her, proving once again that he is the better man out of all the male leads that have appeared in this show.
2. Dealing with her family’s financial situation
It isn’t a very highlighted topic, but throughout the drama, Bunny is constantly concerned about her family’s finances. Contrary to Jae Yeol or Ji Won, she doesn’t have the economic freedom to pursue her artistic career without worries. And things get worse when she finds out her father has been scammed and lost a large amount of money. This not only puts her in an awkward situation with Jae Yeol but also pushes her to find new ways to cover her college expenses.
Despite her family being very sweet and supportive, showering her with love, and turning Bunny into the positive and bright person she is, it is also kind of frustrating that she seems to always be okay with every situation, no matter how unfair it is. This might show her as a bit of a two-dimensional sort of character, which isn’t necessarily bad, but can turn her into a female lead who doesn’t add that many layers to the plot.
3. Living with the ups and downs of a relationship
Romantic and silly as they might be, this time around is a little harder to root for Hwan Jae Yeol and Bunny’s relationship. Even though Jae Yeol is far from perfect and he’s never really shown himself as a green-flag-kind-of-guy, he goes too over the top now. He is a truly sweet boyfriend, and his relationship with Bunny is quite beautiful, but the moment his insecurities show up, he goes as far as to meddle with her friends and family.
For example, he draws a line between Bunny and Ji Won when she isn’t even considering it in the first place, showing himself as possessive and selfish. Nonetheless, he is supportive enough to take a step aside and reach out for help when Bunny’s father gets into an accident. On the other hand, Bunny still struggles to make her point across, making the situation more confusing than it already is, but the way they work things out is still very cute to watch.
4. Choosing the path for her future career
Even with the roller coaster of emotions Bunny goes through, there’s one thing in the middle of it all: her passion for her craft and her career. Love may be important, but when she gets the opportunity to go abroad to continue her studies, she takes the risk despite the fact that it affects her relationship greatly. And you can’t help but feel proud of her, since this is the kind of character development viewers love to watch.
Sadly, Jae Yeol continues to show his immature side after he asks her to stay by his side and refuses to accompany her to the airport when he discovers Ji Won will be in the United States as well. Even if it may appear romantic when he realizes his mistakes and runs after her, it is mostly disappointing to see him always waiting until the last moment to do the right thing. But will this time be too late for him? We will find out the outcome for these lovebirds next week in the final episodes of “Crushology 101”!
