“1st Ever” — K-Pop GRAMMY Nominees Make History Amid Debate Over Largest Snubs
The large and viral account @PopBase shared congratulations for Rosé being the “first Korean soloist” to get a nomination, but it sparked a major debate.

Following the tweet, many accounts started correcting the post, explaining that Jo Sumi was the first Korean solo singer to get nominated and win an award in 1993, sharing it was for the “Best Opera Recording.”
This is incorrect @PopBase
Sumi Jo (조수미) was the first Korean solo singer and first to win a Grammy Award, which she received in 1993.
She won Best Opera Recording for her performance in Richard Strauss: Die Frau ohne Schatten, conducted by Sir Georg Solti with the Vienna… https://t.co/3uMOZNk0zZ pic.twitter.com/rLhPLmGwvK

Yet, fans quickly hit back at this, claiming that Jo Sumi won a GRAMMY but was part of an ensemble while Rosé is the first Korean solo act to be nominated.
Let’s set the record straight!
Rosé is the first-ever K-pop soloist to receive a Grammy nomination, and the first Korean solo act to earn multiple nominations in a single year! 💗
Now about Sumi Jo (조수미) .. yes, she won a Grammy back in 1993 for Best Opera Recording. But… https://t.co/CDU5mFqUKb

.@PopBase is actually correct. Sumi Jo was nominated and won her GRAMMY as part of an ensemble, not as a soloist. Equally amazing and groundbreaking, but not the same thing. This is causing a lot of unnecessary drama because people have a misunderstanding of how the GRAMMYs work. https://t.co/qeiAgEyOvD

Yet, it also sparked reactions as many believed that BTS and HYBE had pushed forward the idea of the group being the first Korean nominees at the GRAMMYs when it was more appropriate to specify it as K-Pop. While some ARMYs defended the fact that it was said as the first “K-Pop” stars, many hit back, pointing out that many articles and tweets specified “Korean.”
Then bts is not the first korean artist to earn a grammy nomination. We cheered! https://t.co/60BZKf7wyX pic.twitter.com/nsID18o1T9

HYBE media play is crazy cause why is this just coming out when BTS members have been parading themselves as the first Korean act to be nominated? https://t.co/U1LmmxTPvn

does this mean BTS fan accounts have been lying all these years because they’ve claimed their group as the first Korean artist overall to be nominated a Grammy Award and by taking this as reference that old statement would’ve been bullshit? https://t.co/4QMbUDELAk

It’s now proven by ratmys themselves that @bts_bighit didn’t paved the way for any korean or Asians and that they weren’t the first Korean act nominated for Grammys https://t.co/Qvn52L9gIP pic.twitter.com/M3vqu7KqET
