Arirang is BTS’s first album since the group went on a mini-hiatus to complete their military service and release solo projects.

The album is set to release on March 20.

Similar to many K-pop groups, BTS is releasing multiple physical versions of the album to boost sales, but one version is titled “Living Legend.”

Many Koreans have taken issue with the name, seeing it as overly self-important and even embarrassing. Some have accused the boy group of “self-proclaiming” themselves as legends.

  • “Honestly, calling themselves ‘Living Legend’ right after all that bulk-buying… lol.”
  • “Plagiarism, bulk-buying, controversies over live performances, unpaid national insurance, drunk driving… Their image is totally different from what’s on the hot posts. Is ‘Living Legend’ part of the same fame-strategy?”
  • “Wow, next they’ll be comparing themselves to The Beatles.”
  • “The Beatles lol… do they even have a conscience?”
  • “Living Legend: Don’t inconvenience citizens by locking down Gwanghwamun for a week.”
  • “Wow… calling themselves Living Legend… really something else.”
  • “Self-proclaimed Living Legend, yet the public doesn’t even know their songs.”
  • “Why do I feel embarrassed?”

This backlash comes shortly after BTS faced widespread criticism over their Gwanghwamun concert, adding to public scrutiny ahead of the album release.
