In an exclusive interview with Hellokpop, JINHO opens up about his solo debut, offering insights into his creative process and aspirations as a singer-songwriter. Join us as we explore the depths of his artistry, the inspiration behind [CHO:RD], and his vision for the future.

Congratulations on your solo debut with your first mini-album [CHO:RD]! How are you feeling after the release?

JINHO: Seeing and hearing that the songs I’ve worked on are well-received by listeners has made me incredibly happy.

Can you tell us a bit about the meaning behind the album title [CHO:RD]? What can fans expect from this mini-album in terms of sound and concept?

JINHO: First, [CHO:RD] refers to the term ‘code’ in music. In addition, ‘Cho’ is my last name, while ‘rd’ stands for ‘road,’ symbolizing a path to get closer to me through the album. I enjoy writing lyrics that evoke vivid images, so I think it would be great if you imagined a story for each song as you listen.

We’re especially curious about the title track. Can you give us any hints about its genre, lyrics, or overall vibe?

JINHO: The genre is primarily R&B, and I used the concept of Cinderella to humorously describe a girlfriend who has a curfew and has to go home by midnight. I wanted to use light and witty lyrics to convey it.

What are your hopes and expectations for this solo debut? What kind of impact do you hope to make with your music?

JINHO: My goal was to make people more curious about my musical world and leave them wanting to hear my next work. For this album, I tried to write songs that are straightforward and enjoyable to listen to. Something positive that would calm and soothe people’s minds was what I intended to offer.

You’ve had a long and diverse career in music, from PENTAGON to CREZL. How have those experiences shaped you as an artist and influenced your solo work?

JINHO: I’ve covered a number of songs for MAGAZINE_HO as part of my musical journey, which has inevitably made me more aware of things like chorus work and video creation. That was a very beneficial experience. I was able to incorporate a range of styles in the record since I enjoy listening to music from all different genres.

As a singer-songwriter, what inspires your songwriting process? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

JINHO: When I write a song, I begin by picturing characters and situations, almost like writing a novel. I visualize everything and work while always staying in tune with those characters. I occasionally even write down their personalities or backgrounds as a sort of preface. Also, I often wander around a lot, talking to myself and wondering, “What would they be thinking?” (laughs).

Can you tell us about the creative process behind the album and music video? Were there any memorable moments during the recording process or filming of the music video you can share?

JINHO: I had a strong desire to incorporate animation, and I wanted it to be done so at the appropriate points to correspond with the lyrics. I wanted the animation to have more of a nostalgic feel than the modern ones, like something I might have seen on TV as a child. We did a lot of outdoor filming, and since I had to work with an actor I was meeting for the first time, I thought it might be challenging to get along. However, because it was so hot, we teamed up and worked fast, which made it easier for us to get over any awkwardness quickly (laughs).

You’re also a talented musical actor. How does performing in musicals differ from being on stage as a singer? Do you find that one influences the other?

JINHO: There are numerous similarities between musical theater and singing, as both require performers to communicate emotions through their songs. The distinction is that actors must passionately express themselves, while singers must control their emotions. These barriers seem to be breaking down a lot recently for me. I feel like they support one another more and more as I do both.

What are some of the most valuable lessons you’ve learned throughout your musical journey so far?

JINHO: The most valuable lesson that I’ve learned is to be sincere. I think everything will find its way back to me if I’m sincere and truthful. I believe if I put in the effort over time, I will eventually improve as a person.

What are some differences you’ve experienced in preparing for this solo debut versus preparing for group activities?

JINHO: There is a slight difference in the pressure. When I was part of a group, the pressure was shared, but now I have to face it all alone, which may occasionally be scary and intimidating. But the satisfaction of overcoming it seems even greater.

Looking back on your career, what are you most proud of?

JINHO: When I reflect on my career, I believe I’m most proud of my fans and listeners. I’m really appreciative of my listeners and fans for sticking with me throughout my journey.

What are your goals for the future? Are there any specific genres or styles of music you’d like to explore in the future?

JINHO: I’m already experimenting with a lot of different music genres and styles, and these are really helping me develop my artistic expression. On the other hand, I want to continue challenging myself in the field of classical singing, which I’m still studying.

What can fans look forward to from JINHO in the coming months and years?

JINHO: I want to be a person who makes music that uplifts people and be the one they can always rely on during their difficult times. So please look forward to my journey as I strive to become this kind of artist.

Lastly, please leave a message to your fans who have been supporting you throughout your career.

JINHO: Thank you always for your support. I get to enjoy making music and performing on stage because of our UNIVERSE! I’ll keep working hard. I love you all!
