Former DAY6 member eaJ Park has sparked a major discussion online regarding K-Pop artists’ silence over the multiple genocides unfolding around the world.

eaJ himself has been very vocal about his support for Palestine, especially for the people of Gaza, who have been subjected to genocidal conditions by Israel.

However, recently, with the horrifying atrocities in Sudan finally making it to mainstream news, eaJ’s social media account was spammed with comments to speak up about Sudan as well. The idol responded to the comments gracefully, admitting that he has been learning more about Sudan recently and posting accordingly. However, noting that the comments on his profile mostly came from fan accounts associated with BTS, he also made a gentle suggestion that fans should encourage their favorite K-Pop artists to speak up as well.

I am learning and posting more about Sudan as of late! It does disappoint me a tiny bit seeing the profile pictures though :/ i really think we can make the world a better place if you commented on their posts as well! Let’s make the world a better place 🫶 pic.twitter.com/NIziMqtpJ8

He followed up the post by saying that standard K-Pop contracts, as per his knowledge, could not legally bind artists to not practice their freedom of speech. In fact, a contract seeking to repress an artist’s freedom of speech would be considered illegal in South Korea.

Also to be transparent, as far as I am aware, restricting freedom of speech in a a working environment is illegal in South Korea, or at least that’s what I was told by one of the team execs during my residency. Could have changed but I doubt it :/

That has literally nothing to do with what is allowed to be said and not. At this point, it is a choice. They have the right to their own choices but wanted to point out from my experience of 12 years in the kpop industry that you can say whatever you want to say legally and…

Many appreciated eaJ for offering his perspective and clarification as an industry insider, prompting some fan accounts to even call out their respective artists.

i think this context is very interesting when you think about how many idols have been called out for supporting brands that are on the boycott list (especially when the news first started ramping up about palestine) and everyone just stayed silent and didn’t defend themselves https://t.co/uoGnpOxq4W

as an avid bts fan since 2015, i can say that they do not deserve any defending from anyone. “the pressure from blah blah blah” they made hybe. not only that but fuma from &team came out and talked about palestine directly. who do you think faces more pressure? bts does not care. https://t.co/NipqAeEnAQ

A significant number of K-Pop fans have long tried to reach out to artists and discourage them from associating with brands and individuals who have been involved in such crimes against humanity for the past few years. However, very few of their efforts have proven to be fruitful. In the case of Palestine in particular, only a handful of idols, including eaJ, have spoken up. You can read more about the other here:
