Netflix‘s KPop Demon Hunters is taking over the world, but the movie didn’t do much for Girls’ Generation‘s Taeyeon. And while idols obviously reserve their rights to their own opinions, some netizens have entirely forgotten the fact and are now finding themselves in a heated debate about Taeyeon’s negative review of the movie.

In response to a fan asking if she had seen KPop Demon Hunters, the idol got straight-up and honest about it.

Fan: What about KPop Demon Hunters?

Taeyeon: I did watch it but I didn’t think it was for me. Like I got chills down my neck… Made me feel weird. It was the worst when the boys started posing in gat.

Fan: They’re the Saja Boys, like grim reapers.

Taeyeon: Oh, I’m dead, LOL.

Fan: But isn’t the tiger super cute?

Taeyeon: There’s a tiger in it? I guess I didn’t watch it that far.

Long-time Taeyeon fans, who know her usual preference to align with non-romance, non-drama, horror thrillers, had no trouble understanding why the animated musical fantasy film did not intrigue her.

But then, when screenshots of Taeyeon’s messages began circulating online, some netizens simply could not accept the fact.

So I wondered what the genre was. When I looked it up, it was categorized ‘For Kids.’

Taeyeon’s final remark about the movie, in particular, got some heat:

  • “It’s okay if it’s not your thing, but dismissing it as being just “for kids” feels unnecessarily condescending…”
  • “Korean culture content is doing well—do we really need to spread negativity? Negative takes are piling up here too, like all these comments talking sh*t about how they didn’t like it either… Not a good look.”
  • “Just curious—doesn’t the tiger appear before the Saja Boys with the hats?”
  • “Tearing it down like that just makes you seem unpleasant, tbh.”
  • “I get she doesn’t have to like it but dismissing it as “for kids” does feel condescending for sure.”

Others have come to Taeyeon’s defense and resonated with why Taeyeon couldn’t finish watching the movie.

  • “TBH, I only like the soundtrack. The movie itself is for kids, LOL.”
  • “I couldn’t get through it either…”
  • “People debating whether or not she’s dissing KPop Demon Hunters with a conversation she had with her fans like 10 days ago? So ridiculous, LOL. Even top box office movies get bad reviews, why act like it’s some crime?”
  • “I tried watching it because everyone said it was popular, but it just wasn’t for me and I stopped…”
  • “Same, I tried to push through but gave up watching.”
  • “Wow, this was exactly me. LOL. I turned it off because it felt too childish… the characters’ actions and reactions were so exaggerated on purpose—it just gave off this forced, can’t-put-my-finger-on-it vibe that really put me off.”

  • “But did she really have to say it like that? It’s not just a private convo with friends—it’s a public space where everyone can see it…”
    • “Well, no. It was a space just for fans, and fans were the ones who asked the question lol.”
  • “It’s totally fine to post a negative review—why are people overreacting?”
  • “This is basically the new-gen Frozen, LOL It’s made to hit everything teenage girls would love, so of course it is childish.”
  • “Why are so many people acting like they got personally offended?”
  • “Just move on like “oh I guess that’s how she feels,” no need to be so extra.”

  • “Are we not allowed talk about personal taste anymore? What is this, North Korea?”
  • “If she didn’t even know about Derpy, she probably didn’t even watch half of it. Must’ve genuinely not been her vibe. Haha.”
  • “Since she is a K-Pop idol herself, maybe it felt extra cringey to watch an entire movie about it, LOL.”
  • “Doesn’t Derpy show up before the guy puts on the hat and poses? Did she maybe only watch the clips?”
  • “I got the gist of it from clips posted everywhere, so I didn’t even bother watching LOL I’ve tried other hyped dramas before and they all flopped for me—Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, Crash Landing on You, etc. So…”

Meanwhile, KPop Demon Hunters and its soundtrack continue to see success in the real K-Pop realm—with the support of those who found the movie worthwhile.
