In a recent episode, after she was introduced to the show’s viewers, Yoo brought up her dating scandal. She revealed that her past relationship—speculated to be with the disgraced K-Pop idol Seungri—lasted six years, and the two almost got married. She added, “We broke up because things happened.”

After her revelation made headlines, the actress took to Instagram and held an AMA session via Stories. To a follower who asked if she was serious about meeting someone on Couple Palace, Yoo said she was being as genuine as possible.

Then, to a hateful comment telling her to “Stop victimizing” herself, Yoo responded, “I never said I was a victim.”

Yes, I’m showing my real personality on the show. I really wanted to be as genuine as possible. Personally, I can never really hide my feelings and I love giving. I keep giving and giving to whoever it may be, if I like them. I don’t calculate… which does mean I get played a lot. I think people assume I’m all girly and fake, but I’m actually pretty funny. I’ve been told that, with the way I laugh, I’m like Park Na Rae. I’m a chill, simple, and not-that-sensitive girl.

Despite her taking on the reactions to her controversial appearance head on, Couple Palace viewers remain skeptical about her intentions. Some accused the actress of “playing the victim” of Seungri’s downfall when she knew what kind of a person he was (as their alleged relationship lasted through his investigation and incarceration).

  • “But she dated Seungri… and then Heo Ung. No one forced her to date those men. Calling them ‘bad men,’ like come on. Don’t play the victim. It’s so absurd how she keeps using her dating history as a concept. I’m willing to bet she’s on this show to promote her online shopping business. Let’s not give her the attention.”
  • “Literally no one forced her to date Seungri, though… She remained in the relationship knowing everything about him. So why the victim act? LOL. This is peak K-Emotional manipulation.”
  • “Look. If your dating history consists of a criminal who can no longer live in Korea because of what he did and a loser who made headlines for mistreating his ex-girlfriend… You’re not normal. Why is she acting like it all happened by chance?”
  • “Dated him for as long as she wanted, and now this? LOL. Stop portraying her like this. Cut the sad music.”
  • “I hate the way she puts on that fake, innocent look. It’s infuriating, LOL.”
  • “Huh…? Didn’t she make the choice to stay with Seungri through the incarceration? LMAO. I don’t understand why she’s even on this show. I mean, I feel bad about what happened to her family or whatever. But her talking about her dating history? Baffles me.”

In addition to Seungri, Yoo Hye Won was rumored to be in a relationship with Heo Ung. Read more about the basketball star’s troubled love life here:
