Love Whisper (from Parallel / Rainbow – 2017)
Previous Thoughts: “In some ways, Love Whisper is as GFriend as GFriend gets, but mostly it sounds like a generic post-Luv Apink track. On first listen, the song’s lack of ambition feels like a devastating blow, squandering every bit of excitement the girls had built up.” (full review)
Updated thoughts: This song suffered from the circumstances around its release. It came on the heels of the excellent and daring Fingertip and represented a reversion to form for the group after that single flamed out with the public. I begrudged Love Whisper for these concessions and gave it a much-too-low score. The song’s standing has improved immensely in the years that followed, mostly because GFriend fit this light new jack swing style to a tee. The chorus plays like a warm hug, addictively bouncy and comforting. And, we’ve even got a patented Yuju power note to take us to the climax! Sure, its production could use a bit more imagination, but why fix something that was never broken?
