A Korean court recently sentenced a rent-a-car owner for extorting money from a K-Pop idol, threatening her with footage of her intimate moment with a male idol.

As per reports on September 18, KST, the car owner, identified as “A,” had rented a van to a female idol back in February 2024. Upon getting the vehicle back, they reviewed the footage from the in-vehicle camera and discovered scenes of the idol engaging in intimate behavior with a K-Pop boy group member in the backseat.

“A” then decided to extort money from the female idol using this footage. They contacted her with a series of threatening messages, mentioning the male group’s name, and demanded that she pay half of the van’s cost, which is ₩47.0 million KRW (about $33,100 USD).

Under fear and pressure, the victim transferred money to “A” on three separate occasions, totaling ₩9.79 million KRW (about $6,890 USD). Despite this, the threats continued.

“A” was finally reported and charged with extortion, which is punished with prison time of up to 10 years or a fine of up to ₩20.0 million KRW (about $14,100 USD) under Korean law. On October 18, KST, Judge Gong Woo Jin of the Incheon District Court sentenced “A” to eight months in prison with a two-year probation. They were also ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.

The court noted that “A” had caused the victim severe emotional distress and ruled that their actions constituted blackmail and abuse of personal information. However, the ruling also took into account that most of the extorted money was returned to the victim.

While netizens have begun to speculate about the identity of the two idols, no concrete evidence has been made public.
