Former Lovelyz member Ryu Soo Jung has opened up about the strict environment she experienced as a K-Pop idol, including the unexpected ways her agency would punish the members for breaking the rules.

In a recent appearance on the popular YouTube show CONSO, Ryu Soo Jung appeared alongside former Laboum member Yujeong, where the two discussed life as idols and the intense control their agencies had over their day-to-day lives.
While many fans are aware of dating bans and phone restrictions, the lovely star revealed that the consequences for disobedience went beyond what most might expect.
Host: “What about Lovelyz? Did you have the same kind of rule?”
RyuSooJung: “We didn’t have an official clause or anything, but they made very clear what would happen if we broke the rules.”
Host : “They punished you? How?”
Ryu Soo Jung: “They’d pull you out of all the practices and everything. Like, not letting you attend vocal lessons.”

The agency used a more calculated approach, pulling members out of crucial practice sessions as a form of control. She went on to describe how this kind of system made them feel.
Host: “Wait, but isn’t that a good thing? You get to rest.”
Ryu Soo Jung: “Yeah, you do rest. But when you rest too much, it becomes a problem.”
Host: “Then it shows on stage? Like, you’re not placed in the center, and you’re pushed to the side?”
Ryu Soo Jung: “That kind of thing. Once you see that happen, it really makes you go, ‘Yeah, I should never break the rules.'”

Laboum member Yujeong backed Ryu Soo Jung’s words, clearly stating that it felt like the agency was gaslighting them.
Yujeong: “So basically, we were totally gaslit into just going along with everything.”

The conversation also revealed how tightly both groups were monitored. Yujeong shared that Laboum’s agency had installed CCTV cameras inside the dorm’s shoe cabinet to track their movements. Even a short trip outside triggered immediate questioning from the company. You can read more about it below.
