Actress and model Lee Sung Kyung has officially stepped into the world of musicals, dazzling audiences with her portrayal of Jasmine in the Korean production of Aladdin, which wrapped its run on September 28.
For Lee, the role was more than just another project—it was the realization of a dream she had cherished even before her debut.
The Broadway hit Aladdin, staged across four continents and seen by over 21 million people worldwide, opened in Seoul last November before moving to Busan in July, enjoying sold-out shows and unwavering audience enthusiasm. Within this celebrated production, Lee Sung-kyung drew admiration for her unique vocal range, graceful presence, and seamless synchronization with the animated Jasmine beloved by fans.
Reflecting on the experience, Lee expressed deep gratitude:
“Performing on stage was a dream I held long before my debut. Knowing how much I loved musicals, many senior actors encouraged me to take the leap. Thanks to Genie Kang Hong-seok’s support, I mustered the courage to audition. Musicals are so precious to me that I didn’t want to challenge recklessly. But with everyone’s encouragement, I dared to try, and I’m truly thankful for the positive outcome.”
Lee also shared her personal connection to the show:
“I’ve always loved the music in Aladdin. The pure joy in the songs makes them wonderful to sing along to, and it feels like fate that a video of me singing A Whole New World years ago received so much love. That song, in a way, led me to debut as a musical actress.”
For Lee, stepping into Jasmine’s shoes has been a journey of both challenge and fulfillment:
“Being on the Aladdin stage, sharing laughter and emotions with audiences of all ages, feels like a dream. Every part of a musical is both a challenge and a hope for me. There are so many roles I have yet to play, and I want to work harder to show an even better side of myself in my next production.”
With her successful debut, Lee Sung Kyung has not only added a new dimension to her career but also proven that dreams, no matter how carefully guarded, can bloom with courage, timing, and support.
