Singer Sung Si Kyung has issued a public explanation and apology after it was revealed that his one-person agency had not been properly registered under Korea’s Popular Culture and Arts Industry Development Act.
On September 18, Sung admitted that he had failed to recognize and complete the new registration. Although many had accused him of doing so to avoid taxes, Sung clarified that he had zero intent of doing so.
Sung currently works under SK Jaewon, a one-person agency headed by his older sister. The company was established in February 2011 under the regulations of the time, but after the Act on the Development of the Popular Culture and Arts Industry was introduced in January 2014, the agency failed to comply with the new registration requirements. He added that his agency is now proceeding with the registration process as quickly as possible and promised to correct all issues. His full statement can be read below.

“Hello, this is Sung Si Kyung. I sincerely apologize for causing concern to so many people over this matter related to me.
After my debut, I went through various companies and many experiences. In 2011, I established a one-person agency. The purpose was to reduce overhead and costs, and to manage only as much as I was capable of. In 2014, with the enforcement of the Act on the Development of the Popular Culture and Arts Industry, the registration system for popular culture and arts agencies was introduced. I failed to recognize and fulfill this obligation at the time.
I have now learned that this system is an important legal safeguard, designed to protect the rights of artists and ensure the healthy operation of the industry. For example, it requires basic training for representatives, prevents unfair contracts, protects the rights of artists and youth, prohibits sexual exploitation, and provides education on management practices.
It was clearly the company’s mistake not to recognize the new system and complete the necessary training and registration, and I deeply regret this. We are now quickly proceeding with the registration process and will correct what has been done wrong. However, I want to emphasize that the failure to register was in no way related to concealing income or tax evasion. My income has always been transparently reported through a tax accountant.
This incident has given me an opportunity to reflect more strictly on myself. I will be thorough and responsible in my activities. Once again, I am truly sorry for causing concern.”
