GOOD PLACE

Even after seven years, my favorite ONF track is still 2018’s Complete. I just think their vocals work so well against a tropical house beat. As soon as Good Place kicks off, I’m delighted to hear a soundscape that could have easily featured on the group’s first two albums. The percolating beat reminds me of Complete‘s brisk verses but also lesser-known classics like 2017’s Original.

With this said, Good Place doesn’t boast hooks as incredible as either of those songs. Of course, a “lesser version” of a masterpiece is still something to celebrate and there’s plenty to love here. The thumping intro and flute-like synth gets us started on a high and the lithe verse that follows does a nice job navigating the production. In comparison, the chorus is a bit of a let-down. It’s fun hearing Wyatt take the lead, but the melody feels reserved when it should be explosive. Much of the drama comes during the verses instead. The song just needs one big centerpiece (either vocal or instrumental) to make it pop.
