RELEASE PREVIEW: Old English Sheepdog Returns with Polish and Ambition in American Ping Pong

Review By Jung Bae | September 3, 2026 They say necessity is the mother of invention, and Old English Sheepdog aren’t shy about admitting that their choice to work in the simpler riffs of post punk revival was originally influenced by frontman Songrew’s brachytactyly limiting his play. But listening to “American Ping Pong”, the eponymous lead track of the four-piece band’s sophomore album, it’s clear that they’ve gone above and beyond to hone the style. There’s a sparkling synth-and-guitar riff that initially drives the track forward, yes, but this thing is a constantly roiling current: there are breakdowns and pauses, extended builds and punctuated explosions, spunky bass and heady synths taking turns leading the charge, playful variations on rhythm. It’s an unpredictable yet organic five minutes of almost unbroken instrumental dazzle. That track is the clear scene-stealer, but the album in general sounds neater, more intricate, and more ambitious than before, standing in contrast to Dude.. (2024)’s lo-fi finish.
