Ahead of BTS’s highly anticipated free concert at Gwanghwamun, authorities have implemented sweeping security measures that are now sparking backlash among Korean citizens.
In response to heightened concerns over terrorism and large-scale crowd safety, Seoul officials have decided to shut down public storage lockers across major subway stations in central areas. The closures affect 17 stations, including Jonggak, City Hall, Jongno 3-ga, Euljiro 1-ga, Anguk, Gyeongbokgung , Gwanghwamun, Seoul Station, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, and Myeongdong, among others.
The move is intended to eliminate potential security risks posed by unattended luggage in high-traffic areas during the event, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of attendees.
However, at the same time, a separate temporary luggage storage facility will be set up at the Jongno Integrated Government Complex, specifically aimed at accommodating fans traveling from other regions and overseas, many of whom are expected to arrive with large suitcases. This dual approach has triggered criticism domestically. Some Korean citizens argue that while public facilities used by locals are being shut down in the name of security, alternative services are being selectively provided for visiting fans, particularly foreigners.
Set up of the luggage storage facilities.Online, critics have questioned the fairness of the policy, pointing out that everyday inconvenience for residents is being overlooked, while resources are redirected to support an influx of international concertgoers. Comments reflecting frustration have circulated, with some accusing authorities of prioritizing tourism and global image over local needs.
| theqoo- Ah they’re so f*cking annoying.
- This is ridiculous, causing all kinds of inconvenience just because of one concert.
- I have work that day, and there are no buses, traffic is insanely bad so I was already pissed, but I thought I’d just leave my luggage at Seoul Station and take a taxi. Now they’re even blocking the lockers? At this point I might as well just give up on everything.
- Nothing but ridiculousity everywhere.
- So people using nearby stations, not even the actual venue stations, can’t even store their belongings, and they’re only providing convenience to some fans who came for the concert? Does that make sense? They’re taking away public convenience for regular citizens?
As the event approaches, the situation highlights the growing tension between public safety, global tourism, and local inconvenience, with BTS’s Gwanghwamun concert once again placing Seoul at the center of a complex balancing act.
