SEVENTEEN member Mingyu attracted hundreds of excited fans during his Hong Kong promotional event, but the appearance quickly became an online talking point after reports of a foul odor incident during the long wait outside the venue.
Mingyu attended a coffee brand event at Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui on July 11. Local reports said more than 500 fans had already gathered outside the shopping mall by midnight, with many choosing to wait overnight for a chance to see the SEVENTEEN member. Videos shared online showed long lines stretching outside the venue.
Fans arrived prepared with folding stools, handheld fans, and other supplies as they waited for the event. Staff members were also present to manage the crowd. However, the large gathering gained unexpected attention after reports claimed that a fan may have experienced a bathroom accident while standing in line, TheStandard reported.
According to posts circulating online, some people nearby noticed a strong smell, and staff members reportedly used air freshener in an attempt to cover it.
Mingyu Wins Over Hong Kong Fans
According to Koreaboo, some social media users also claimed they saw a diaper inside a plastic bag, though the details of the incident have not been independently confirmed. The story spread quickly on platforms including Threads and X, with many users reacting with surprise while others expressed sympathy, noting the difficult conditions of waiting overnight in crowded areas.
Despite the online controversy, Mingyu received a warm welcome when he appeared at the event. The loud cheers from fans filled the venue, and he repeatedly gestured for everyone to lower their voices so he could hear the host. He even covered one ear while trying to follow the conversation.
The event also continued with several fun moments. Mingyu thanked fans for their support and shared that he was happy to return to Hong Kong. He mentioned wanting to eat dim sum after the event, and the host also recommended that he try a pineapple bun.
During the program, Mingyu participated in a Cantonese slang challenge and played games with fans. When SEVENTEEN's song "THUNDER" was played, he surprised fans by showing off some dance moves as the crowd sang along.
Before leaving, Mingyu posed for photos, waved to fans, and thanked everyone for attending. He said he was sorry he could not greet every fan individually but wished everyone good health and hoped to meet them again.
