W Korea’s annual “Love Your W” charity event — long promoted as a campaign to support breast cancer awareness — has become the cause of public outrage.

The party sparked frustration over what many netizens see as misplaced priorities and performative philanthropy.

The event, often attended by South Korea’s biggest stars, has been criticized for resembling a luxury party rather than a charity campaign.

Videos shared online showed attendees drinking, dancing, and celebrating late into the night, with little visible connection to the supposed cause. The choice of music and atmosphere, described by many as “tone-deaf” for an awareness event, only fueled the backlash.

According to W Korea’s own website, the Love Your W campaign has donated a cumulative ₩1.10 billion KRW (about $774,000 USD) since its launch twenty years ago. The funds reportedly supported breast health programs, medical checkups, and treatment assistance for low-income women — yet the total amount left many questioning how such a high-profile event could generate so little.

“Love Your W” is one of the largest charity events in Korea, organized by W Korea magazine. Through its gala dinners and parties, the event raises funds to support the Korea Breast Health Foundation and helps cover the cost of screenings and treatments for women and low-income individuals through participatory campaigns.

Over the past twenty years, the campaign has donated a total of ₩1.1 billion KRW and provided around 500 readers with opportunities to receive specialized health screenings for women.
