Song Review: Baby DONT Cry – Bet You’ll Regret It

1 week ago 21

The first girl group from PSY’s P Nation is set to make their debut in about a week, but as with so many other K-pop rookies they’ve released a pre-debut taster. Bet You’ll Regret It (지금을 놓치면 분명 너 후회할 거야) showcases a possible sound for the group that takes cues from the poppier side of BLACKPINK’s oeuvre. There’s certainly potential here but the song’s limited runtime flattens its ambition.

At just over two minutes, Bet You’ll Regret It is as much teaser as it is song. Its pop/rock sound hearkens back to an earlier K-pop generation, opting for a more melodic approach that retraces tropes rather than offering something new. The track’s construction is very plug-and-play, moving through distinct segments that are as predictable as they are pleasant. The pre-chorus feels especially derivative, but I guess if it’s not broken why fix it? In general, I tend to enjoy the steps Bet You’ll Regret It is taking. I just wish it took them in a more adventurous way.

In particular, the song’s chorus needs a major kick in the butt. It’s trussed up with guitar to make it sound big, but the melody is way too flat to stick. And without the running time necessary to tease out the refrain’s charms, Bet You’ll Regret It simply fizzles out with no lasting impact. It does a decent job teasing what will hopefully become a standout 2025 rookie group, but P Nation needs to find Baby DONT Cry stronger material in the future.
