With two members of BAE173 currently participating in other survival series spawned groups, the rest of the members have joined forces with Fantasy Boys (another survival series act) to form project group Double 0ne. In a perfect world, this would “maximize their joint slay,” but despite each group releasing a few tracks I really enjoy, neither have been slaying all that hard on the charts. On The Rocks With Kiss might paint a new way forward for both acts, though its workmanlike approach doesn’t exactly thrill.
Before even listening to the song, On The Rocks With Kiss gets bonus points for its awkward English. That‘s K-pop right there! And rather than adopt current trends, the song itself has a rather classic K-pop sound as well. Unfortunately, everything about it, from the track to the music video, feels constrained by both budget and imagination. Its hooks aren’t particularly catchy and the production does little to distinguish itself. It’s a serviceable effort — the kind of song you might hear as a mission in an under-the-radar audition series. It actually reminds me of a less flavorful version of Fantasy Boys’ own Undeniable from earlier this year.
