Song Review: POW – Flavor

The best thing I can say about POW’s material so far is that they’re doing their own thing. Their music has been quite trend-averse and hasn’t drawn attention to itself, which is rare in K-pop. To me, they feel like an indie group who just happen to be working within the idol system.

New single Flavor keeps the unassuming vibes coming. It’s not a loud, dynamic song. It’s not chant-heavy or gimmicky. In fact, with different production this would be more at home in a coffee shop than a weekly music stage. While this might appeal to a specific subset of listeners, it’s just too subdued and dull for my liking. Nothing sticks out while listening to Flavor — no melody, production touch or performance. It’s simply a nice, flat, laidback summer song. I admire their music for sticking to its guns, but I doubt I’ll remember the taste of this Flavor in a few weeks’ time.
