Song Review: Treasure – Last Night

2 weeks ago 17

Treasure - Last NightAfter a relatively quiet year, Treasure have promised a new album in 2025. Before that, they’re closing out 2024 with pre-release Last Night. The song sees them shifting away with heavy hip-hop sounds of the past and toward a surging pop style that showcases vocal and dance.

When Treasure debuted back in 2020, this is the kind of music I’d expected they might make: something less swaggy and a little more fresh/youthful. They’ve dabbled in this sound at times, but Last Night offers a more mature iteration that strikes a nice balance between wistful and anthemic. I can easily see a world where this is a Crooked-style success, melding rock intensity with emotional melodies. There’s a long legacy of this kind of song within YG Entertainment and it’s a great time for Treasure to find their place within that pantheon.

But while Last Night sounds great on paper and works well enough as a song, it’s missing the special sauce that might vault it into “classic” territory. I’ll blame this largely on its chorus, which feels functional rather than revelatory. The energy crackles and the the guys belt out the melodies with plenty of conviction, but the songwriting is ultimately too generic to fully click. With that said, there’s room for the song to grow and I enjoy hearing Treasure tackle this musical approach.
