She shares the creative process behind the track, the themes she wanted to explore, and the personal meaning she hopes to convey to her fans. Hellokpop: To start off, could you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your musical journey so far? What led you to pursue a career in music?
먼저, 본인 소개와 지금까지의 음악 여정에 대해 간략하게 말씀해 주시겠어요? 음악 경력을 시작하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?

YOU DAYEON: Hello, I am a solo singer, YOU DAYEON. When I was a trainee, I happened to appear on a program called Show Me the Money, and that was the first opportunity for me to start doing music in earnest. After that, I showed my face to the public once again through an audition program called Girls Planet. Since then, I have been working as a solo singer, and I am greeting you like this.
안녕하세요, 저는 솔로 가수 유다연입니다. 과거 연습생이였던 시절에 우연히 쇼미더머니라는 프로그램 나간 것이 제가 본격적인 음악을 시작하게 된 첫 계기였는데요, 이후 걸스플래닛이라는 오디션 프로그램를 통해 다시 한번 대중분들께 얼굴을 비췄고. 이후 지금은 솔로가수로써 활동을 하며, 이렇게 인사드리게 되었습니다.

HKP: Congratulations on the release of “TALK”! How would you describe the song in your own words?
“TALK” 발매 축하드려요! 이 곡을 어떻게 표현하고 싶으신가요?

YOU DAYEON: First of all, “TALK” is a city-pop genre song with English lyrics. The main phrase in the song is “love it when you talk with your eyes.” It’s a song that literally expresses love or emotions that can be expressed just with each other’s eyes, even without having to say or express it. So in my song, “TALK” can be seen as a word that expresses love.
먼저 TALK라는 곡은요 영어 가사로 구성 된 씨티팝 장르의 곡이에요, 노래에서 메인이 되는 구절은 “love it when you talk with your eyes”인데요 ”당신이 눈으로 말할 때 좋다“ 말 그대로, 굳이 말하고 표현하지 않아도 서로의 눈빛만으로도 이야기 할 수 있는 사랑의 표현이나 감정들을 나타낸 곡이에요. 그래서 제 노래에서 Talk는 곧 사랑을 표현하는 단어라고 보실 수 있어요.

HKP: “TALK” has such a strong vibe. How did you approach the vocal delivery for this song? Was there a particular emotion or mood you wanted to convey through your voice?
“TALK”는 강렬한 느낌이 정말 좋아요. 이 곡의 보컬은 어떻게 표현하셨나요? 목소리를 통해 전달하고 싶은 특별한 감정이나 분위기가 있었나요?

YOU DAYEON: When I was recording this song, I really tried to imagine the other person looking at me and talking to me through eye contact, and I tried to record it while capturing that emotion as much as possible. I smiled brightly without realizing it, so I hoped the song itself would come out sweet and bright, and I think the emotion I intended was captured well.
저는 이 곡을 녹음할 때 정말 상대방이 저를 쳐다보며 눈맞춤으로 대화하고 있다고 생각하고 상상하고, 그 감정을 최대한 담으며 녹음하려고 했어요, 저도 모르게 밝게 미소가 지어져서 노래 자체도 달달하고 밝게 나왔으면 좋겠다, 라고 생각했는데 제가 의도했던 감정이 잘 담긴 것 같아요.

HKP: The song feels like it’s meant to be a statement. What do you hope listeners take away from “TALK” on an emotional level?
이 곡은 마치 어떤 메시지를 전달하려는 의도가 있는 것 같습니다. “TALK”를 통해 청취자들이 감정적으로 어떤 점을 느끼기를 바라시나요?

YOU DAYEON: If you (listeners) feel the emotions and feelings I put into the recording and listen to it, I think I would be more than happy. I hope that the song will be one that you can listen to in various ways by imagining the emotions of love that I put into the song, substituting them for your own experiences.
제가 녹음하며 담았던 그 감정과 기분들을 느끼며 그 감정을 빼앗아 들으신다면, 저는 더할나위 없이 기쁠 것 같아요. 제가 노래에 담았던 사랑에 대한 감정을 각자의 경험에 대입해서 다양하게 상상하여 들을 수 있는 곡이 되길 바래요.

HKP: “TALK” is your fourth digital single—how do you feel about your growth as a solo artist since your debut with “Down Down Down”?
“TALK”은 당신의 네 번째 디지털 싱글입니다. “Down Down Down”으로 데뷔한 이후 솔로 아티스트로서 성장한 것에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요?

YOU DAYEON: Since debuting as a solo artist, I feel that I have grown so much that I feel different from week to week. Before my debut, I had been a group trainee for a long time, not as an individual. So, my first experiences as a singer, especially as a solo singer, were really unfamiliar, but I think they have helped me grow and become stronger. That’s why I think I am so happy and so grateful for the opportunities I have now and the various experiences I have.
솔로 아티스트로 데뷔한 이후에 저는 정말 한 주 한 주의 제가 다르게 느껴질 만큼 성장해가고 있다고 느끼고 있어요, 저는 데뷔 이전엔 개인이 아닌 단체 연습생 생활을 오래 했었는데요, 그래서 가수로써, 그것도 솔로가수로써의 첫 경험들은 정말 낯설기도 했지만, 그만큼 저를 배로 성장시키고 단단하게 만들어 주는 것 같아요. 그래서 저는 이런저런 경험들을 할 수 있는 지금과 기회들이 너무 즐겁고 또 너무 감사하다고 생각해요.

HKP: Can you tell us about the creative process behind making “TALK?” Were there any unique challenges or moments of inspiration, and was there a part of the production process that you particularly enjoyed or felt especially proud of?
“TALK” 제작 과정에 대해 말씀해 주시겠어요? 특별히 어려웠던 점이나 영감을 받았던 순간이 있었나요? 제작 과정에서 특히 즐거웠거나 자랑스러웠던 부분이 있었나요?

YOU DAYEON: When I recorded my previous songs, producers would always watch the direction, but this song was the first time that I recorded it alone, with no one else in the recording studio except for the engineer who was recording, so it felt a little more special. I had to record it solely based on my intuition, so it would have been hard if I didn’t trust myself at the time. After recording all the songs, I developed a firm belief that no matter what happens in the future, I will trust myself and do it like I do now, so I think I was a little proud of myself.
제가 이전 곡들을 녹음했을 땐 항상 프로듀서 분들께서 디렉을 봐주시곤 했었는데요, 이 곡은 정말 처음으로, 녹음을 받아주시는 엔지니어님을 제외하곤 녹음실에 정말 아무도 없이 저 혼자서 녹음을 했기 때문에 조금은 더 특별하다고 느꼈던 곡이에요. 오로지 저의 감을 믿고 녹음을 해야 했기 때문에, 그땐 제 자신을 믿지 않으면 힘들었을거에요, 노래를 전부 녹음하고 난 뒤에는 앞으로 어떤 일이 있어도 지금처럼 나를 믿고 해 보자 라는 굳건한 마음이 생겨서 자신이 조금은 자랑스러웠던것 같어요.

HKP: We saw that you used an anime version of yourself for the promo teasers. What inspired you to go for this style, and how does it reflect the vibe of the song?
프로모 티저에 본인의 애니메이션 버전을 사용하셨다고 하셨는데, 이런 스타일을 선택하게 된 계기는 무엇이며, 곡의 분위기와 어떻게 관련이 있나요?

YOU DAYEON: I’m usually very interested in animation illustrations and artwork, so if I had the opportunity, the thing I wanted to do the most was to collaborate with an illustrator. Also, like the many characters I’ve admired as a child, I really wanted to create my own character when I grew up, and that’s my biggest motivation. As for the mood of the song, since the genre of this song is city pop, the first thing that came to mind was a fancy background, and I wanted to express the feeling of that time in the song, with fancy cities, signs, and purple. I was so grateful that the animator expressed his intentions so well.
저는 평소에 애니메이션 일러스트나 아트워크에 아주 많은 관심이 있어요, 그래서 저에게 기회가 주어진다면 가장 해 보고 싶었던게 일러스트레이터와의 협업이였어요. 또 어린시절 한번쯤은 동경했었던 여러 캐릭터들처럼 저도 커서 저만의 캐릭터를 꼭 만들어 보고 싶었던게 가장 큰 동기이고요. 노래의 분위기는 이번 노래 장르가 씨티팝이다 보니 화려한 배경이 가장먼저 떠올랐고, 노래에서 느껴지는 그 시절의 느낌을 화려한 도시,간판과 보랏빛 등으로 표현하고 싶었어요. 애니메이션 작가님이 의도하고자 하는 바를 잘 표현해주셔서 너무 감사했어요.

HKP: How do you feel the music in “TALK” reflects where you are as an artist right now, compared to your previous releases like “Down Down Down” and “Text Me”?
“TALK”의 음악은 이전에 발매한 “Down Down Down”과 “Text Me”와 비교했을 때 현재 아티스트로서 당신이 어떤 위치에 있는지를 어떻게 반영한다고 생각하시나요?

YOU DAYEON: Personally, I think that rather than the activity indicators of music, my level of participation and experience with each album reflects my position as an artist for each album. I think this album is different from my previous albums in that I planned the direction, choreography, album design, etc., myself, and since it has the most of my touch among the albums, I think it is the album that best reflects my position as an artist, unlike my previous albums.
저는 개인적으로는 음악의 활동 지표보다는, 그때 그때 앨범에 대한 저의 참여도와 경험의 척도가 앨범 마다의 아티스트로써의 위치를 스스로 반영하고 있다고 생각하는데요. 아무래도 이번 앨범은 이전 앨범들과는 다르게 디렉,안무,앨범 디자인 등을 스스로 계획했고 앨범들 중에 가장 많이 저의 손길이 담겨 있기 때문에 이전과는 다르게 저의 아티스트로써의 위치를 가장 잘 반영한 앨범인 것 같아요.

HKP: If you were to describe “TALK” as a character, what would it look like or act like in a story?
“TALK”를 캐릭터로 설명한다면, 이야기 속에서 어떤 모습 또는 행동을 보일까요?

YOU DAYEON: I think the most imaginable and memorable character is a scene where a fancy mirror ball is spinning, and a large crowd of people are happily dancing, but only the other person and I are still, and talking with our eyes and smiling.
화려한 미러볼이 돌아가고 있고, 수 많은 인파들이 즐겁게 춤을 추고 있는데 그 안에서 오직 상대방과 저만이 멈춰있고, 눈으로 대화하고 웃음짓고 있는 모습의 캐릭터가 가장 상상되고 떠오르는 것 같아요.

HKP: Outside of music, what things inspire you or bring you joy in your daily life?
음악 외에 일상생활에 영감을 주거나 기쁨을 가져다주는 것은 무엇인가요?

YOU DAYEON: I think the biggest inspiration for me is various experiences and emotions. I think the ideas that come from various experiences or thoughts that come from various emotions are the biggest inspirations. I think the moments when these inspirations or ideas come to me are the happiest and most fun moments for me.
저에게 가장 큰 영감은 다양한 경험과 감정인 것 같아요. 여러 경험에서 나오는 아이디어나, 다양한 감정에서 비롯되는 생각들이 가장 큰 영감인 것 같아요, 저는 이런 영감이나 아이디어가 떠오르는 순간들이 저는 제일 기쁘고 재미있는 순간인 것 같아요.

HKP: How do you find your own voice as a solo artist, and how does “TALK” reflect that journey?
솔로 아티스트로서 어떻게 자신만의 목소리를 찾나요? 그리고 “TALK”는 그 여정을 어떻게 반영하나요?

YOU DAYEON: I don’t think I tried to look good or put on any special effort. I just wanted to show myself, my original voice. And I wanted to convey the feeling I got when I heard the melody and the emotions I felt when I sang it. I think there’s a lot of sweet emotions in it.
특별히 잘 보이려고 노력하거나 꾸미지는 않았던 것 같아요. 그냥 제 자신을 보여주고 싶은 것 같아요, 원래 제가 가지고 있는 목소리요. 그리고 멜로디를 들었을 때 느껴지는 느낌과 노래 부를 때에 감정을 그대로 전달하고 싶었어요. 조금은 달달한 감정이 많이 실린 것 같아요.

HKP: What’s something that people might not know about you, but you think is an interesting or unique fact?
사람들이 당신에 대해 모를 수도 있는, 하지만 당신이 흥미롭거나 독특한 사실이라고 생각하는 것은 무엇입니까?

YOU DAYEON: You may not know me, but I think I have a unique charm that makes you want to recognize me when you meet me. It’s like we, who didn’t know each other, are doing this interview.
저를 모르실 수 있지만, 저를 마주쳤을 땐 곧 저를 알아보고 싶게 만드는 저만의 매력이 있다고 저는 생각해요. 서로 몰랐던 저희가 지금 이렇게 인터뷰를 하고 있는 것 처럼요.

HKP: Before we wrap up, do you have a final message for your fans who have supported you since the beginning?
마무리하기 전에, 처음부터 당신을 지지해 온 팬들에게 전하고 싶은 마지막 메시지가 있나요?
