TWICE member Tzuyu will reportedly be leaving JYP Entertainment after 11 years, deciding to not renew her contract, according to an exclusive report by News1. The report did also say she’ll continue participating in group activities with TWICE, but it would still go down as a landmark moment for the group, who has been together under JYPE all this time and renewed as a group back in July 2022.
JYPE issued one of those typical comments that are really a “no comment” but acknowledge all members are negotiating, “TWICE is currently in the period of discussing contract renewals, and we will inform you as soon as matters are finalized.” Hate to read too much into it, but the “still negotiating” company line response rarely results in the report being wrong.
It’s also notable as TWICE recently concluded their THIS IS FOR World Tour, and at the end of that tour, TWICE’s leader Jihyo mentioned the group would be on hiatus for the rest of the year.
JIHYO says that TWICE will be taking a break after the final concert in Seoul:
"For the past 11 years, as TWICE and as a solo artist, we barely had any breaks, so I want to spend the rest of this year relaxing and taking a bit of a break. This break is really something we need… pic.twitter.com/5f7uVbmTOn
There’s nothing weird about this in a vacuum, of course. In fact, a popular and veteran group like them not taking breaks is one of those things unique (and arguably weird) about K-pop, but put together with the Tzuyu report and the negotiations between JYP and the other TWICE members about renewal, and one can’t help feel it throws more questions out there about the timing.
