On June 28, Junhan sent a series of messages on Bubble, seemingly responding to a fan discussing research. His first responses mirror this, mentioning PCR, a method of replicating DNA in a lab, and saying he would come up with some possible questions.

  • It’s so much fun to choose a research topic. What are you studying?
  • Oh, genetic testing, PCR!!!
  • It’s so interesting, I’ll think of some silly questions about it.
  • If it’s a gene amplification technique, can you amplify only the good genes to treat a disease?

In an unexpected comment, he says that Black people are good at music and better at hearing due to the presence of more cells in their ears. Juhan continues by speaking in hypothetical terms, questioning if it would be possible to combine “qualities” from Black, White, and Asian/Indian people.

  • Black people are said to have more cells in their ears, which improves their hearing and makes them good at music.
  • I’m really jealous.
  • Is it possible
  • To bring together the advantages of different racial groups?
  • Like [combining] the ability of white people to break down sugars, the physical strengths of black people, and the intelligence of Asians/Indians(literal translation: yellow and Indian people)

His next set of messages mentioned that stem cell experimentation was unethical, but did not elaborate further on his previous comments.

  • Well, it is stem cell research.
  • It’s already being researched…
  • Ethical issues do need to be addressed
  • [reply]If you think it’s ethically problematic, don’t do it. But if you want to, then go ahead and learn.

A translation account shared these messages, sparking outrage as they went viral over the nature of his comments. Junhan’s remarks, as inaccurate as they are, echo ideas found in eugenics. Eugenics is an unscientific and racially biased study of ways to “improve” a population through the inheritance of specific traits. Eugenics was used as justification for the racial policies of Nazi Germany, leading to the mass murder of those outside of the Aryan ideal, including the disabled and homosexuals.

Additionally, experimentation was done on children who fit these ideals, showing that eugenics harms even those considered the “goal.”

Additionally, his comments about the “best qualities” of each ethnicity are based on racist stereotyping, which has been historically harmful. For example, the perception that Black people are “physically superior” was used as part of the reasoning and justification for the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

Netizens commented on his messages, expressing shock and disgust over what was said.

this is genuinely so ignorant and gross. kpop idols promoting eugenics and race science to their audience like it's some game https://t.co/ojeYI8bSTc

genuinely tired of idols being so disappointingly ignorant, it’s this kind of rhetoric that still fuels racial disparities in healthcare to this day. black people aren’t superhuman, we receive subpar care in hospitals bc of these stereotypes and to share that on bbl is… wow https://t.co/Pgoe9yUQmI
