Funny or thoughtless?

In the world of K-Pop, idols have a lot of unwritten rules to follow—one of them being no explicit cursing. ALLDAY PROJECT‘s Tarzzan, though, has sparked some divided reactions for going against the current and dropping an F-bomb equivalent on the group’s fan-communication app.

Under a fan’s post sharing their passionate love for Annie, Tarzzan commented on how funny the comparison was. He used the Korean word “jonna,” a curse word whose closest English equivalent would be the F-word.

Fan: My love for Annie is like my armpit hair… Keeps growing over and over, no matter how many times I shave it off.

Annie: Wow… Thank… you… This is such a poetic comparison…

Tarzzan: Wow, this is jonna* funny.

Seeing Tarzzan’s comment, Annie immediately called him out for damage control. After coming up with a questionable excuse, Tarzzan then ultimately deleted the comment.

Annie: TARZZAN-SSI. I SAID NO CURSING.

Tarzzan: Oh… I was talking about my friend, Jon Na. He’s really funny…

Annie: Ugh, I should not have left early… He’s out of control.

Still, screenshots of the interaction have since circulated online, dividing the K-Pop fandom over whether Tarzzan’s behavior was appropriate. Some are fine with the use of jonna, and even found it humorous, given it’s one of the most frequently used curse words in the Korean language.

  • “Other top idols did it too, so I thought maybe it’s okay these days… Guess not.”
  • “It’s funny, but I also feel for Annie struggling to keep him under control.”
  • “If an ordinary person cursed at work, people would say their personality is trash, no? LOL. Who swears in front of others like that?”
  • “What’s wrong with ‘jonna’ though? These days people use jonjal (f*cking handsome), and jonye (f*cking pretty) all the time everywhere and those are just shortened forms of jonna.”
  • “This is fricking hilarious. LOLLLLLLLLLL.”
  • “It’s a turn off when non-celebs use jonna. So…”
  • “You can literally see Annie aging in real-time. Frickin’ Tarzzan.”
  • “TBH… Tarzzan is something else. LOL.”
  • “If my fave did something like that, I’d freak out. Being witty and vulgar are two different things.”
  • “Isn’t he 24? He’s not even a teenager, so why are people saying ‘he’s young so it’s fine’? LOL. If it were another male idol, this would’ve hit 1000+ comments already.”

Others aren’t so sure—and felt sorry for Annie having to clean up after Tarzzan.

  • “Seems shallow and thoughtless, not really likable.”
  • “As an idol, saying jonna on a fan platform is a bit ick…”
  • “I just feel bad for Annie.”
  • “I do want K-Pop idols to hold back a little. Profanity is fine in private, but… little by little it’s getting normalized and I don’t like seeing celebrities casually swearing.”
  • “Annie really seems to have a good personality.”
  • “What kind of working adult swears in social settings? Honestly, the reaction here is super mild.”
  • “You can tell Annie’s really struggling… If it were a female idol instead of a male one, people wouldn’t be so lenient, LOL.”
  • “He should be more careful. I want to see ALLDAY PROJECT last long.”
  • Jonna is just funny! LOL. Stop nitpicking idols. How many of you k-netz have never  ever written ‘ㅈㄴ’ (jonna) in your own comments? LOL.”
