BLACKPINK's Rosé has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in K-pop history by securing eight nominations at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, making her the most-nominated K-pop artist in a single year for the event.
The nominations were announced on Tuesday, August 5, during MTV's official reveal of the 2025 VMA nominees.
Rosé earned an unprecedented seven nominations for her collaboration song with Bruno Mars, "APT.," which has been nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects. Her solo track "Toxic Til the End" from her debut album Rosie received an additional nomination in the Best K-pop category, bringing her total to eight nominations.
The achievement places Rosé among the most nominated artists of 2025, tying with Sabrina Carpenter at eight nominations each. Only Lady Gaga leads with 12 nominations, followed by Bruno Mars with 11, and Kendrick Lamar with 10. This marks the first time Rosé has been nominated as a solo artist at the VMAs, having previously only received group nominations with BLACKPINK.
Rosé's reaction to the news reflected her disbelief at the historic achievement. In a video posted to her Instagram Stories, the visibly emotional singer said, "So I've just heard that I've received eight VMA nominations. I am beyond shocked, and I just don't know what to say. I'm absolutely speechless! This is a crazy day! Whoa! It's really, really wild! What's happening?!"
The success of "APT." has been nothing short of extraordinary since its release in October 2024. The bilingual track debuted at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Rosé the highest-charting female K-pop soloist to date. The song has since climbed to number 3, becoming the first song by a female K-pop artist to enter the chart's top five. It spent 12 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the Billboard Global 200, the longest streak of any track in 2024.
The collaboration has shattered multiple records across streaming platforms. "APT." reached 1 billion streams on Spotify in just 100 days, the second fastest in the platform's history. On YouTube, the music video surpassed 1.2 billion views in 131 days, making it the fifth fastest to reach that milestone.
Music industry experts view Rosé's VMA nominations as potentially opening doors to future Grammy recognition. Music critic Lim Hee-yun noted that winning a major VMA award could boost her chances of Grammy nominations, stating, "Winning a big award at the VMAs would prove that Rose has a presence in the US music market. It would be a kind of green light."
