As I’m catching up on some news, I unfortunately came across that Crayon Pop member Choa shared her cervical cancer diagnosis and her progress at overcoming it via surgery and what not. The goal of it was not only to update people, but share what she’s learned and hopefully to help others who are in a similar situation.
She spoke about her whole journey in a video posted to social media.
In a video released alongside her post, Choa revealed, “I was diagnosed with cancer at 33 years old. In May last year, I was happily celebrating my first year of marriage. I went to the hospital for a prenatal check-up, and that day, I received a cervical cancer diagnosis.” She recounted, “At first, I couldn’t believe it. How could someone as young and healthy as I am have cancer? I wondered if it was a misdiagnosis. I visited five of the best university hospitals in the country.”
She continued, “I underwent various cancer tests, including my first-ever MRI and Pet CT. The diagnosis was Stage 1 cancer. I was told that due to a 3 cm tumor, preserving my fertility would be difficult. It felt like a bolt from the blue, and I cried so much that my legs felt weak and I couldn’t see ahead. It was the most challenging time of my life, but I held my husband’s hands tightly, prayed, and did not give up.” She explained, “To reduce the size of the tumor, I did everything I could. I studied daily, exercised, and completely changed my diet.”
Choa reflected, “Thanks to those efforts, the size of the tumor was much smaller than expected at the time of the surgery, and I was miraculously able to preserve my fertility.” She shared that it has now been over a year since her surgery and she recently passed her fourth follow-up examination.
In the caption she expresses her desire for children in the future and hopes that her sharing this can help somebody.
She mentioned, “There are many people who are suffering more than I am, so I am being cautious. But I thought that my story might provide some help and hope to someone, even just a little. Cancer has taken away many things from me, but it has also given me great realizations and teachings about the direction of my life, and I am living a much healthier and more vibrant life now.”
Choa shared, “I am facing another surgery soon to preserve my fertility. Since I had to remove my cervix, I will undergo a procedure to tie my uterine body in advance.” She expressed her desire, “There are many hurdles to overcome for pregnancy and childbirth in the future, but I want to meet a beautiful child, become a mother, and provide comfort and hope to those who have gone through similar experiences after being fully cured.“
She advised, “If you are going through an extremely difficult and dark time right now, please remember that this too shall pass, and do not let go of the thread of hope.”
This especially hits home since two women in my immediate family have had cervical cancer, and from that I know one of the treatments is a hysterectomy, an easier decision to cure the cancer compared to still wanting to have kids since they were older. Can’t imagine trying to balance survival versus wanting kids, though since they caught it early it should hopefully be alright.
Obviously any celebrity going through this is terrible, but considering Crayon Pop is one of my favorite groups, this was especially shocking to hear and I hope to get more positive news in the future.
Hopefully Way’s Girls will be able to dispose of cancer as well.
