2 weeks ago 12

Big Ocean opens up about their creative process for ‘Follow,’ their partnership with Mark Batson, and more in this exclusive interview.

Since their groundbreaking debut on April 20, 2024, with the digital single “Glow,” Big Ocean has been making waves in the music industry. Made up of Chanyeon, Hyunjin, and Jiseok, the group is the first-ever deaf idol group in K-Pop, using their platform to break down barriers and challenge misconceptions about disability. With their powerful use of Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL), and International Sign Language (ISL), Big Ocean is redefining what it means to communicate through music. Following their successful singles “Blow” and “Slow” (featuring DAY6’s Young K), they’ve continued to build a devoted global fanbase.

Now, with the release of their first mini album Follow on November 12, 2024, Big Ocean is pushing even further, offering their fans a mix of familiar tracks and new sounds. The album includes their previous hits “Glow,” “Blow,” and “Slow,” but it’s the title track “Flow” that stands out. This English-language song, produced by the renowned Mark Batson, is an anthem of self-expression and the joy of creating music for oneself. As part of their international promotion, Big Ocean has been exploring the world, meeting fans in New York City landmarks, and preparing for a live performance of “Flow” at the ‘Cool Out 2024’ event in the Cayman Islands. The group’s music video for “Flow,” shot at the National Institute for Deaf Youth in Paris, honors the history and impact of the deaf community.

In this exclusive interview, Big Ocean dives into the creative process behind ‘Follow,’ their journey since we last talked, and the powerful message they aim to share with the world through their music. From the making of their title track, “Flow,” to what they are most proud of so far, Big Ocean opens up about what this album means to them and how they’re continuing to break new ground in the industry.

Hi Big Ocean! Thank you for chatting with us again! Congratulations on your first mini-album, ‘Follow!’ How does it feel to finally release it?

Hyunjin: Thank you so much! Releasing Follow feels surreal. It’s our first physical album, and we put so much of ourselves into it. Seeing the response from our PADOs and knowing they’re connecting with the music is incredibly rewarding. It’s a milestone we’ve dreamed of, and it feels amazing to finally share it with the world.

The theme of self-acceptance in ‘Follow’ is very empowering. How has creating this album helped each of you grow personally?

Chanyeon: Working on ‘Follow’ taught me to embrace my own journey. Songs like “SLOW” reminded me that growth takes time and it’s okay to move at my own pace. The process of making the tracks made me reflect on my experiences and realize how far I’ve come. It’s been deeply personal for all of us.

Hyunjin

Your title track, “FLOW,” has such an inspiring vibe. Can you tell us about the process of creating this song?

Jiseok: “FLOW” was a really special project for us. Working with Mark Batson, who tailored the song to match our strengths, made it feel like it was meant just for us. Everything was crafted to fit how we connect with music, from the beats to the rhythm. Recording it and creating the choreography, especially incorporating International Sign, was such a fulfilling experience.

Mark Batson collaborated on “FLOW.” What was it like working with him and what impact did he bring to the track?

Hyunjin: Mark was incredible to work with. He really took the time to understand our vision and needs. His attention to detail—like crafting beats that we could feel and tailoring the rap for non-English speakers—was thoughtful and empowering. He gave us the confidence to push our boundaries, and his energy brought out the best in us.

The music video for “FLOW” was filmed at the National Institute of Deaf Youth in Paris. What was it like to shoot there, and what message did you want to convey with this setting?

Chanyeon: Filming at the National Institute of Deaf Youth was unforgettable. It’s such a historic place, and being there felt like a tribute to the resilience and strength of the Deaf community. Through the video, we wanted to show that music and connection go beyond barriers. It was our way of celebrating inclusivity and the beauty of embracing who you are.

You spent the summer preparing for ‘Follow.’ What has your daily routine been like in the lead-up to the album release?

Jiseok: Our days were packed! From early morning lessons to late-night choreography practices, we were constantly working to perfect everything. We also spent a lot of time reviewing sign language integration in our performances to make sure it felt natural and meaningful. It was exhausting but so worth it.

Chanyeon

Are there any memorable or funny moments from your time traveling this summer?

Hyunjin: One of the most memorable moments was filming “FLOW” in Paris and doing a random dance play at La Défense. Seeing fans join in and learn the choreography on the spot was so moving. Their energy was contagious and became a mini celebration we’ll never forget.

You’ve introduced a new genre, Free-soul POP, with this album. Can you explain what this genre means to you and how it reflects Big Ocean’s music style?

Chanyeon: Free-soul POP is all about authenticity and resilience. It’s a genre that celebrates the freedom of self-expression and the joy of embracing who you are. For Big Ocean, it reflects our journey—our challenges, growth, and connection with our PADOs. It’s about creating music that feels genuine and uplifting.

Each of you brings a unique background to the group. How do your individual experiences shape Big Ocean’s music and message?

Jiseok: Our different journeys definitely shape who we are as a group. Coming from a sports background taught me the importance of teamwork and discipline, which I bring to our performances. Hyunjin’s love for music after his recovery and Chanyeon’s experience as an audiologist both add unique layers to our message of resilience and hope.

Does a particular song on ‘Follow’ resonate most with you? Why?

Hyunjin: For me, it’s “SLOW.” The song reminds me to breathe and trust the process I learned during our journey. It feels like a moment of calm in the middle of everything, and I hope it brings the same comfort to our listeners.

Jiseok

As the first hard-of-hearing group in K-Pop, you’re setting an example for others. What advice would you give to aspiring artists facing their own challenges?

Chanyeon: Don’t let challenges define you. Your journey is unique, and your voice matters. Take it one step at a time, and believe in your ability to overcome obstacles. Surround yourself with people who support you, and remember that your differences are your strength.

How do you find time to relax and recharge between recording, performing, and engaging with fans online?

Jiseok: For me, dance is both work and relaxation. It helps me reset and stay connected to my emotions. I also enjoy quiet moments when I can reflect and recharge. Spending time with Hyunjin and Chanyeon and sharing laughs is always refreshing.

What can fans look forward to next? Are there any new projects or collaborations on the horizon?

Hyunjin: We’re always looking for new ways to connect with our PADOs. Right now, we’re focused on promoting ‘Follow,’ but we’re also brainstorming ideas for future projects, collaborations, and maybe even another trip to meet more of our fans around the world. Stay tuned!

Looking back on everything you’ve accomplished so far, what moments are you most proud of, and how do they motivate you moving forward?

Chanyeon: One moment that stands out is winning the Hallyu Special Award. It felt like recognition not just for us but for everyone who has supported our journey. Moments like that remind us of the impact our music can have, and they inspire us to keep pushing boundaries.

Your fans, PADOs, have been such strong supporters from day one. Is there anything you’d like to say to them as you celebrate the release of this album?

Big Ocean: To our PADOs, thank you for being the wave that carries us forward. Your support means everything to us. ‘Follow’ is for you, and we hope it inspires you as much as your love inspires us. We can’t wait to create more memories together!!
