In this exclusive interview, KANG YUCHAN opens up about the creative process behind “Champagne Poppin’,” the inspiration and vision that shaped his bold new sound and image, and what this exciting solo chapter means to him as an artist ready to forge his own path.

Hellokpop: Hi YUCHAN, congratulations on your solo debut with “Champagne Poppin’”! It’s exciting to see you stepping into the spotlight with such a bold and unique sound. To start, can you share what this solo debut means to you and how it feels to showcase a new side of yourself as an artist?
안녕하세요 유찬님! “Champagne Poppin’”으로 솔로 데뷔를 하신 것을 축하드립니다! 유찬님은 이렇게 대담하고 독특한 사운드로 스포트라이트를 받게 된 모습을 보니 정말 기대돼요! 이 데뷔는 유찬님에게 어떤 의미이며 새로운 아티스트 모습을 선보이는 게 어떻게 느껴지실까요?

KANG YUCHAN: Thank you! It still doesn’t feel real that I debuted as a solo artist. It truly feels like a new chapter is starting, one where I can show a completely new side of myself under the name KANG YUCHAN. Every single day brings something new – lots of unfamiliar feelings and excitement.
감사합니다! 솔로 아티스트로 데뷔한 게 아직도 조금은 실감이 안 나요. 강유찬이라는 이름으로 온전히 새로운 모습을 보여줄 수 있다는 게 정말 새로운 챕터를 시작하는 기분이에요. 매일매일이 낯설고, 또 그만큼 설레는 하루들이에요.

HKP: Choosing a debut track is a big moment. What drew you to “Champagne Poppin’” as your debut track, and what message are you hoping to convey through it?
데뷔 곡을 고르는 것이 괜장히 중요한 순간이죠. “Champagne Poppin’”이 어떤 면에서 좋아해서 데뷔곡으로 선택하게 되었나요? 이 곡을 통해서 어떤 메세지를 전하고 싶을 희망일까요?

KANG YUCHAN: From the moment I first heard “Champagne Poppin,’” I knew there was something special about it. It was bold and confident, yet it had the energy I wanted to convey with my first solo debut. The message I wanted to convey through this song was the sentiment of “even if you doubt me, it’s okay. I will take that doubt and make it into my strength.”
처음 “Champagne Poppin’”을 들었을 때부터 이 곡은 뭔가 특별하다는 느낌이 있었어요. 대담하고 자신감 넘치면서도, 첫 솔로 데뷔곡으로 보여주고 싶은 에너지를 담고 있더라고요. 이 곡을 통해 전하고 싶었던 메시지는, “의심해도 괜찮아. 나는 그 의심을 나만의 힘으로 바꿔낼 수 있어”였어요.

HKP: “Champagne Poppin’” has a sleek dance-pop vibe with a UK Garage beat. What drew you to this particular style and sound for your solo debut?
“Champagne Poppin’”이 UK Garage 기반인 매력적인 dance-pop 장르의 곡인데요. 이번 솔로 데뷔에서 이 스타일과 사운드에 끌리게 된 특별한 이유가 있나요?

KANG YUCHAN: The UK Garage/dance-pop combination felt really fresh and original. The rhythm and groove just seemed to pull me in, and I found myself thinking, “This could really become my sound.” I felt that this was the perfect song to naturally showcase both my vocals and the performance.
UK 개러지와 댄스팝의 조합이 너무 신선했어요. 그 리듬이 저를 확 끌어당겼고, “이게 나만의 사운드가 될 수 있겠다”는 생각이 들었죠. 보컬과 퍼포먼스를 모두 자연스럽게 담아낼 수 있는, 저에게 딱 맞는 곡이라고 느꼈어요.

HKP: You contributed to the lyrics of “Champagne Poppin’”. Can you share what inspired the provocative lines like “I love it when you doubt me”?
“Champagne Poppin’” 작사에 참여하셨잖아요. “I love it when you doubt me” 같은 도발적인 가사에 영감을 무엇이 주었나요?

KANG YUCHAN: Through the lyrics like, “I love it when you doubt me,” I wanted to show that I will channel the energy from all of the negative looks or comments (I see) into my own confidence. To some, ‘doubt’ might be hurtful, but I believe it can become the strength we need to become stronger. I wanted to convey that sentiment through music in a somewhat provocative way.
“I love it when you doubt me” 같은 가사는, 솔직히 말하면 부정적인 시선을 저만의 자신감으로 바꿔보고 싶다는 마음에서 나왔어요. 누군가의 의심이 상처가 될 수도 있지만, 그걸 힘으로 바꾸면 더 강해질 수 있다고 생각해요. 그걸 음악적으로 도발적으로 표현하고 싶었어요.

HKP: Can you share a moment during the recording or filming of “Champagne Poppin’” that really surprised or excited you?
“Champagne Poppin’” 녹음 때나 뮤비 촬영 때 깜짝 놀라거나 흥분하게 한 것이 있었나요?

KANG YUCHAN: There is a scene in the music video in which I pop the champagne open, but it actually exploded much more forcefully than I expected, so I was so surprised! The reaction in the music video is 100% real, even though it’s a little embarrassing.
뮤직비디오에서 샴페인을 터뜨리는 장면이 있는데, 생각보다 훨씬 세게 터져서 깜짝 놀랐어요! 그 장면에 나오는 제 리액션은 100% 진짜예요. 조금 민망하지만요.

HKP: The song combines sensuality with an addictive rhythm. How did you want to express your “bad boy charm” through this track and performance?
“Champagne Poppin’”이 관능성과 중독적인 리듬을 결협합니다. 이 곡과 퍼포먼스로 통해서 ‘베드보이의 매력’을 어떻게 표현하고 싶었나요?

KANG YUCHAN: I thought the “bad boy” charm wasn’t just about looking cool; it was about confidently expressing my own confidence and energy on stage. I wanted to show a different side of me than you can usually see: a daring, bold side of KANG YUCHAN.
‘배드보이’ 매력이라는 게 단순히 멋있어 보이는 걸 넘어서, 무대 위에서 저만의 자신감과 에너지를 당당하게 표현하는 방식이라고 생각했어요. 평소와는 다른, 과감하고 도전적인 모습을 보여드리고 싶었어요.

HKP: That confident and provocative energy really stands out. In what ways does this concept reflect your real personality, and in what ways is it different?
그 자신감 넘치고 도발적인 에너지가 정말 돋보이네요. 이 컨셉이 당신의 진짜 성격을 어떻게 반영하고, 어떤 면에서 다른가요?

KANG YUCHAN: This kind of energy is part of who I am. Off stage, I’m easygoing and like to have fun, but on stage, I channel a stronger, more intense energy. It’s still me – just a more amplified and focused version of myself.
이런 모습이 제 실제 성격의 일부이기도 해요. 물론 무대 밖에서는 여전히 편하고 웃긴 사람이고, 무대 위에서는 좀 더 강한 에너지를 꺼내서 표현하려 해요. 어떻게 보면 저 자신이지만, 무대 위에서는 더 진해지는 느낌이랄까요.

HKP: Both from20 and HELLO GLOOM helped bring this track to life. Did they give you any memorable advice or guidance while preparing for your solo debut? How did that mentorship impact your approach?
from20와 HELLO GLOOM 두분이 이 곡을 살아 있게 해주셨잖아요. 솔로 데뷔를 준비하면서 대표님들이 조엄이나 유도를 주셨나요? 이 멘터쉽이 (mentorship)이 유찬님의 접근법에 영향이 있었나요?

KANG YUCHAN: from20 and HELLO GLOOM were truly invaluable mentors throughout this project. Rather than simply creating the song, they made me believe in myself more. From vocal direction to the overall concept, they thoughtfully guided me through everything. We spent a lot of time together, and it really helped me grow as an artist.
from20 대표님과 HELLO GLOOM 대표님은 이번 작업에서 정말 큰 멘토 역할을 해주셨어요. 단순히 곡을 만드는 걸 넘어서, 제가 제 자신을 더 믿을 수 있게 만들어줬어요. 녹음 디렉션부터 전체적인 방향까지 함께 고민해주시면서, 저도 아티스트로서 성장할 수 있었던 시간이었어요.

HKP: Looking at the full picture of your solo debut—from the music to the visuals to the performance—what do you think will surprise fans the most?
데뷔를 전반적으로 보시면 , 음악, 비주얼, 포퍼먼스 다 포함해서, 팬들을 가장 놀랍게 할 것은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?

KANG YUCHAN: I think what fans will be most surprised by in this debut is that it’s a completely different vibe from the YUCHAN they’ve seen so far. The music, visuals, and performances have all become more refined and powerful, and I think that my colors have become more defined with this release.
이번 데뷔에서 팬분들이 가장 놀라실 부분은, 지금까지 보셨던 유찬과는 완전히 다른 분위기라는 점일 거예요. 음악, 비주얼, 퍼포먼스 전부 더 세련되고 강렬해졌고, 저만의 색깔이 더 뚜렷해졌다고 생각해요.

HKP: CHOICE knows you as the bright or sunshine maknae of A.C.E. How has your role shifted at WAY BETTER, and how do you feel stepping into a new dynamic?
CHOICE분들이 유찬님을 밝고 해 맑은 막내로서 알고 있는데요. 웨이베러에 들어오시면서 유찬님의 역할이 어떻게 바꾸셨는지, 또 새로운 새로운 환경 속으로 들어가게 된 소감이 어떠신가요?

KANG YUCHAN: I might have been the bright sunshine of A.C.E, but at WAY BETTER, I have definitely become more independent and taken on a much more proactive (leader) role. I am growing into a self-directed artist, not just on stage, but also in planning and creative expression as a whole. This change is very exciting and fun. I am very grateful for this opportunity.
A.C.E에서는 밝고 해맑은 막내의 이미지였다면, 웨이베러에서는 훨씬 더 독립적이고, 주도적인 역할을 하게 된 것 같아요. 무대뿐 아니라 기획과 표현 전반에 있어서 더 주체적인 아티스트로 성장하고 있어요. 그 변화가 너무 재미있고 또 감사해요.

HKP: How did you prepare mentally and physically for your solo debut compared to group comebacks?
그룹 컴백과 비해서 솔로 데뷔를 위해서 정신적으로 그리고 신체적으로 어떻게 준비하셨나요?

KANG YUCHAN: Unlike group activities, the physical and mental pressure while preparing for my solo debut was much bigger. Filling up the stage by yourself is not an easy task, but I have more freedom to express myself and fully share my story, which I really appreciate.
그룹 활동과 다르게, 솔로 데뷔는 정신적으로도 육체적으로도 부담이 컸습니다. 혼자 무대를 채워야 한다는 게 쉽지 않았거든요. 하지만 그만큼 내가 하고 싶은 걸 더 자유롭게 표현할 수 있었고, ‘내 이야기’를 온전히 전할 수 있다는 게 조금 좋았던 것 같습니다.

HKP: You have been described as having “limitless potential” to evolve from idol to true artist and global pop star. What does that evolution mean to you?
아이돌에서 진정한 아티스트, 그리고 글로벌 팝 스타로 성장할 수 있는 “무한한 잠재력을 가진 인물”이라고 평가받고 계신데요. 이러한 성장과 변화는 유찬님께 어떤 의미인가요?

KANG YUCHAN: This evolution has such a big meaning to me. The evolution from an idol to an artist—and one day, to a global pop star. It’s not just a title one holds, but about truly becoming an artist who connects with people not through language or culture, but through one’s heart.
그 성장이라는 건 저에게 정말 큰 의미예요. 아이돌에서 아티스트, 그리고 언젠가 글로벌 팝스타로 성장한다는 것. 그건 단지 타이틀이 아니라, 언어와 문화를 넘어 많은 분들과 마음으로 소통하는 아티스트가 된다는 뜻이라고 생각해요.

HKP: As you begin this new chapter, what are your personal or professional goals for the rest of the year?
이 새로운 챕터를 시작하면서, 올해의 개인적이거나 직업적인 목표가 무엇인가요?

KANG YUCHAN: I hope this year will bring more opportunities for me to connect deeper with my fans through music, performances, and various content. In the short term, my goal would be to show the world who KANG YUCHAN really is, while long term, I hope to be able to meet my fans all over the world at concerts and create beautiful memories together.
올해는 팬분들과 더 깊게 연결되는 해가 되었으면 해요. 음악, 무대, 콘텐츠를 통해서요. 단기적으로는 ‘강유찬’이라는 이름을 더 확실히 보여드리고 싶고, 장기적으로는 해외 팬분들을 직접 만나 공연하면서 행복한 기억을 나누고 싶어요.
