Girls’ Generation‘s Yuri has joined the growing list of celebrities who have declared their stance about the ongoing political turmoil.
On December 12, KST, Yuri left a message on the fan communication platform Bubble, subtly addressing fans who were attending the candlelight vigil protesting against President Yoon Suk Yeol‘s declaration of martial law. The idol mentioned seeing Girls’ Generation’s lightsticks in the protest gatherings and commended fans for it. She also acknowledged protestors using “Into the New World” as their anthem at these demonstrations.

After President Yoon Suk Yeol tried to enforce martial law in South Korea on December 3, KST, the country erupted in protests, demanding his impeachment. K-Pop fans have also turned up at the demonstrations with the official lightsticks of their groups, while songs like “Into the New World” have turned into popular protest anthems. This song, in particular, has seen a sharp incline in listeners, marking a unique feat for a 17-year-old track.

While some artists have chosen to stay silent about South Korea’s current political climate, others have openly endorsed the pro-impeachment protests.
