KPop Demon Hunters is a light-hearted Sony animated movie about a group of K-Pop idols who sing by day and hunt demons by night. Some viewers, however, are seeing the film in a new light because of the death of a character — and no, it’s not Jinu.

The film’s big bad is a demon king named Gwi Ma, who feeds on human souls. After suffering with his painful memories for 400 years, demon Jinu strikes a bargain with Gwi Ma: he’ll take down the demon hunters, HUNTR/X, helping Gwi Ma to harvest souls, if Gwi Ma will erase his memories for him.

At the climax of the film, Jinu sacrifices himself to save HUNTR/X’s Rumi and the rest of humanity. His death is by far the most talked-about one, but it’s far from the only one.

Over a dozen minor characters–including a train full of passengers and an elderly man at the bathhouse–die by the movie’s midway point. One of these characters is a fangirl from the fan meeting scene who ships Rumi and Jinu.

A demon siphons her soul while she’s out shopping.

All that’s left of her is the Saja Boys drink she took out of the fridge.

On the r/KPopDemonHunters subreddit, fans discussed the death of this minor character, the Rumi x Jinu ship, and more. “As soon as she died, I knew Rujinu could never happen,” the OP wrote, “The only possible redemption after killing literal children is death.”

The post has made some viewers reexamine the film’s high death toll, how HUNTR/X dealt with it, and whether “dead” characters like the fangirl could be revived.

Some netizens pointed out that HUNTR/X could potentially enter the spirit realm and retrieve all the stolen souls if they defeat Gwi Ma rather than just separating him from the human world.

Other netizens pointed out that the film’s willingness to kill off innocent side characters heightened the stakes. The aftermath, which isn’t explored onscreen, also adds intrigue and a heartwrenching layer to the story.

Rumi’s reaction to the train deaths was also discussed, with one netizen wishing that there had been a scene where Rumi had confronted Jinu instead of singing “Free” with him. (Fanfic writers, start your engines!)
