The upcoming SBS drama Phantom Lawyer introduces a creative way to explore its characters by comparing them to animals, highlighting their instincts and temperaments through an Eastern-inspired perspective.
The approach aims to deepen audience understanding of the characters while adding a fresh layer of storytelling to the legal adventure series.
Set to continue SBS’s tradition of dynamic legal dramas, Phantom Lawyer follows Shin Yi-rang, a lawyer who channels the grievances of the deceased in his own spirited way, and Han Na-hyun, a calculated elite attorney driven by victory at all costs. Character posters for Shin Yi-rang and Han Na-hyun, played by Yoo Yeon-seok and Lee Som, previously sparked strong interest by offering glimpses of their inner worlds. The drama now expands on that concept by framing each character’s personality through animal metaphors, creating a symbolic ecosystem that enhances relational dynamics and narrative depth.
Shin Yi-rang is likened to a squirrel—energetic, emotionally driven, and deeply empathetic. He cannot ignore injustices or unresolved grievances, approaching cases with passion rather than detached calculation. Like a squirrel darting into action when necessary, he combines cheerfulness with quick responses in moments of crisis. His instinct to treat legal cases as human stories rather than mere assignments is expected to drive much of the drama’s emotional and moral conflict.

In contrast, Han Na-hyun resembles an eagle, surveying situations from a strategic distance and prioritizing logic over sentiment. She focuses on data and calculated decisions, striking with precision when opportunity arises. The tension between Shin Yi-rang’s instinctive empathy and Han Na-hyun’s analytical drive sets the stage for compelling conflict and eventual partnership as the two lawyers evolve from adversaries into collaborators.
Supporting characters also receive animal-inspired descriptions. Yang Do-kyung, portrayed by Kim Kyung-nam, is compared to a raccoon—clever and strategic, navigating competition with subtle calculations. Yoon Bong-soo, played by Jeon Seok-ho, functions like a diligent bee, keeping operations running behind the scenes and maintaining organizational balance. Father Matthew, portrayed by Jeong Seung-gil, is described as a lamb with hidden resolve—gentle in demeanor but firm in principle when circumstances demand it. Still images of these characters working together on cases have generated additional anticipation, suggesting that collaboration among contrasting personalities will play a central role in the story.
Shin Yi-rang’s mother, Park Kyung-hwa, played by Kim Mi-kyung, is depicted as a tiger—strong-willed and uncompromising. Having raised her son with determination while running a butcher shop, she embodies resilience and directness. Yet beneath her tough exterior lies deep familial devotion, raising curiosity about how she will react to learning that her son works alongside a ghost as part of his unusual legal journey.
The production team explained that the animal metaphors were chosen to portray character traits intuitively, allowing audiences to grasp emotional and behavioral nuances at a glance. By illustrating how individuals with contrasting instincts collide and eventually find common ground, the drama seeks to enhance both relational storytelling and thematic engagement.
Slated to premiere on March 13 at 9:50 PM, Phantom Lawyer aims to blend legal intrigue with heartwarming adventure, using symbolic characterization to enrich its narrative. Viewers can expect a mix of tension, growth, and human connection as the series explores how diverse personalities shape relationships and ethical dilemmas in the pursuit of justice.
