Over the years, Jay Park has found a successful formula collaborating with female artists. He’s had hits with IU and Kiss Of Life’s Natty and now he’s paired with Chungha for a funky single that brings out the best in his music. I’m one of those listeners who swears on Joah and So Good being pinnacles of Jay Park’s singles run and Gimme A Minute strongly echoes the sound of the latter. It’s nice to see him tackle a dance-heavy track again.
Gimme A Minute plays things loose and funky, built upon a playground of percussion that keeps the energy high throughout. It has a very “early Justin Timberlake” sound, pairing nicely with Jungkook’s 2023 hit 3D. Jay Park is a similar type of showman, donning a sequined top for the track’s compelling dance breakdown. His smooth vocals are an ideal match for this material, easily weaving between the rhythm to bring both swagger and sleekness. Chungha also sounds right at home during her verse, though the song could have given her more to do. She powers Gimme A Minute with its most dramatic note, but her vocals should have been used during the finale as well.
Gimme A Minute‘s chorus is simple and repetitive, mostly relying on the groove to emphasize its charm. A secondary hook might have shot this into the stratosphere, but the song’s ambitions are relatively simple. It seeks to seduce its listener with immaculate vibes and a strong performance. Both work very well, making this my favorite Jay Park single in years.
