Before their full-group comeback next month, GOT7’s Yugyeom has returned with a new digital single. Many of December’s releases are holiday-themed and don’t warrant much of a review, but Sweet Like takes a different approach. Its soft percussion melds house music with Afrobeats for a very trendy entry in his growing discography.
Being a K-pop fan for well over a decade, I don’t know that I ever would have predicted this specific trend to become so notable. Sweet Like‘s hushed atmosphere seems miles away from the futuristic, hyper-bombastic material I first fell in love with. However, any sound can soar if given the right melodies and sense of purpose. Unfortunately, Sweet Like is very much a… vibe. At two minutes, twenty-seven seconds, there’s not much development happening and the chorus removes Yugyeom entirely, opting for a colorful instrumental break. Like many recent K-pop tracks, this feels like high-end, enjoyable background music. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not what I turn to the industry for.
