In the October 7 (KST) episode of KBS’s The Return of Superman, Super Junior member Sungmin appeared alongside his wife, Kim Sa Eun, and his son, Lee Do Yoon, where he opened up about the most controversial period of his idol career.
He noted that he missed the chance to tell his fans about his marriage—and that when the “rumors and articles started spreading, [he] didn’t know how to respond.” Like that, he ended up locking himself in more and more and, in the end, he felt that he had lost his place in the K-Pop world.

I was worried about how to tell my fans, thinking they might be shocked. But rumors and articles started spreading, and I didn’t know how to respond…
…I saw countless hateful comments. It felt like people were criticizing me and looking at me negatively. I couldn’t say anything and just stayed at home. I was scared because singing was the only thing I knew how to do and it felt like I was losing my place more and more.

Despite his emotional speech, the episode has since triggered Korean Super Junior fans all over again. A theqoo post saw hundreds of raging comments slamming the idol for “victimizing” himself on the show, when “he was the one who f*cked it up for himself and the fans.”

- “This is seriously pissing me off LOLLLLL. Oh, so now it’s the fans’ fault?”
- “I lost all affection for him when I heard he made his fan work at his family’s company, had them create videos to play at his wedding, didn’t even give them invitations, and didn’t let them attend the ceremony. Honestly… I wouldn’t have cared otherwise. Just know that when the album jacket photos were sold individually, Sungmin’s copies were always the ones left, so I’d go buy the leftovers just to support him! It’s not just his own fans… He made all Super Junior fans turn on him. I really think he should look deep into his heart and think about what he did. And besides, his position in Super Junior was already pretty shaky… His absence doesn’t really stand out!”
- “I didn’t care that you got married. But the moment I heard what you did to Leeteuk, that was it for me. Damn. If you had any conscience at all, Leeteuk was the one person you should’ve never messed with.”
- “LMAO. I have so much to say but I won’t even start.”
- “Seriously, what is he even talking about…? Sigh.“
- “Oh right… Before Chen, there was you. I almost forgot for a second… Ugh, why won’t you just let us forget?”
- “Why would you turn your fans into your enemies? Honestly, if you want to make a living in this industry, the one thing you need most is your fandom. But you went and turned your fans into the bad guys…”

- “It’s not your marriage that’s the issue LOL. You totally played your fans and now you’re acting like the victim LOL.”
- “Your marriage isn’t the problem. It’s that you blocked fans who spoke honestly, toyed with your fandom, and used sponsorships to hold that wedding—even making fans edit your wedding video for free. You didn’t even invite them or properly compensate them, right? You couldn’t even swallow your pride and apologize to fans once… Your fans even gave you multiple chances to make amends nicely, but you ignored every single one. And now you say what?! LMAO.”
- “Him showing up on The Return of Superman was exactly what everyone expected, though. No Super Junior fan was surprised LOL. If he’d had a baby right after getting married, he probably would’ve been on that show years ago. And I know he’s not the type to cry, so seeing him pretend to tear up during interviews was just funny hahaha. If you two are so proud of what you did, then I hope their kid grows up to act exactly like you two.”
- “The marriage wasn’t the problem… But the fact that he’s still acting like this shows there’s no hope.”
- “Wow, reading these comments… I can’t imagine how devastated the fans must’ve been.”
- “Still blaming the fans? Acting like the victim again? It’s disgusting. He hasn’t changed at all. The same Sungmin.”
- “I mean, his fans are still mad at him for what he did.”
- “I stopped being a Super Junior fan because of you. It’s been 10 years, but I still can’t forget what happened to Buttercup-nim and Pineapple-nim. When your fans were mentally breaking down, they created refuge threads, calmly saying ‘It’ll be okay,’ helping everyone hold on. But your dad literally mocked them in front of everyone, saying, ‘Isn’t it weird for fans to come to the wedding?’ You and your dad were both members on Snowdrop, so you knew exactly how fans were reacting. It was not anger, but devastation. You shouldn’t have done that. You still shouldn’t act like this. I have never stanned an idol as much as I stanned you. So, despite everything, I genuinely wished you happiness… but this? This isn’t right.”
