In the latest episode of “Desperate Bites,” a YouTube show hosted by comedian Lee Eun Ji on Studio Suze channel, SHINee‘s Key appeared as a guest.

While talking about the K-Pop world and surviving it as an idol for 17 years, Key made his goal very clear:
키가 생각하는 아이돌의 정의래…..
좋은 일로만 사회면에 나오자

Anyway, what I think an idol is… I don’t think there are standards for this. But idols should just work hard, be sensible, and don’t let people down. Like, don’t do things that will land you on the news. Be on the news only if it’s for something good, you know? I don’t know, I might not be super clean either. I’m only human. But I try my best not to get involved in any scandals and I’m always careful to have common sense.
— Key
The comment, inevitably, triggered some SHINee fans who felt that it was aimed at Onew. Previously, Onew made it on the news for being taken into police investigation over a sexual harassment case.

Online communities, like theqoo, saw a spike in clashing comments between fans who thought Key said all the right things vs. fans who thought it was a little insensitive of the idol to “team kill” his own member.

- “Oh, but someone from your team was…”
- “Your teammate has been there done that.”
- “To be honest, as long as it’s not a crime, I can usually turn a blind eye. Just don’t commit crimes!!! Is that really so hard?”
- “Talking about his own member, huh?”
- “But there’s someone from SHINee [who has been on the news].”

- “But you’re literally from the same team as an idol who was on the news LOL. I mean, it’s not like Key was defending Onew, so nothing to nitpick here. But the whole conversation is just ironic.”
- “He’s right, so why the hate?”
- “Key hasn’t done anything wrong, but on theqoo, people keep nitpicking him over weird stuff… like dragging him just because his nice house was shown on TV.”
- “Talking about your own member? LOL.”
- “He didn’t say anything outrageous… I can see why some call it member-shading, but why are the comments so dramatic, are y’all just pressed fans of messy idols?”
- “What Key said is true, but since he’s in a group and not a solo singer, hearing negative stuff is inevitable…”

- “He’s right, but why the team-kill? It’s not like Onew left the group.”
- “Where’s all this random nitpick coming from?”
- “I think it’s because he went through it with his fellow teammate that he means this in a more genuine way.”
- “I can relate so much, since I left the fandom because of criminal scandals.”
- “Technically, Onew teamkilled first.”
It is important to note that, after the investigation, Onew was cleared of all charges. Regardless, some continue to associate Onew with his past scandal and label the idol as a criminal.
