BLACKPINK‘s Jennie recently talked with Clash Music about her solo album RUBY and the meaning behind its name.

“Ruby” comes from the name Jennie Ruby Jane, a name she chose for herself so she could have a longer name like her classmates in New Zealand.

As Jennie lived in New Zealand at a young age, it set the tone for her life of facing new challenges.
I didn’t know any English or have an awareness of the cultural background in New Zealand. I consider myself to be a fast learner and I settled into the environment quite quickly. The cultural difference shocked me but in a good way.

According to Jennie, choosing the name “Ruby” has a double meaning as it also represents her strength.
Rubies symbolize courage, resilience and strength, which are qualities I have and try to live up to everyday.

It is this identity that helped in her formative years as a trainee and continues to be part of her personality to this day.
When I started in BLACKPINK, I was so young and naive. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Over time, I’ve come to realize the meaning and significance of having these girls in my life, whilst trying to figure out my own identity.
