Best way to get over someone old is find someone new, even if it’s just a distraction. I was a ‘rebound guy’ for my girlfriend when we first met 15 years ago, so you never know what can happen. Or, plunge headfirst into your interests (k-pop works, but it can be something else too) and that can help. Usually when people say they “still want to be friends” what they really mean is “friendly”. Don’t put too much stock into it.

Imma be for real though I’m going through the worst depression of my life right now. I was sexually abused I think. I am currently translating a Korean short story for a competition for “young aspiring translators”, funded in part by the South Korean government. I have chosen to translate a story about a Korean shaman. The Shamanistic tradition is, although in decline, still present in this day and age, which I think is very interesting from a sociological point of view. I have read a book called “Contemporary Korean Shamanism” by Liora Sarfati that I can very much recommend. It details the struggle of the Shamanistic tradition to stay relevant in modern times and how it succeeds and fails in engaging with the modern world.
In any way, I have spent a lot of time researching for the translation. Although I am quite good in Korean, I of course don’t know all of the ancient words, specific dieties and their importance, how exactly these rituals work and so on. I took several days just falling from one rabbit hole to the next as I found new words in the text I had never heard of before. It’s not even like I can ask my Korean friends for much help, simply because they don’t know anything about it either. Many of the words are not found in normal dictionaries, comprised of very obscure Chinese characters, and even if you find out what is meant and search for it, the amount of information on the details on Korean Shamanism on the internet even in Korean in actually quite limited, like a diety would be mentioned somewhere but I just can’t find any references to what the diety actually does or represents. Other times I have to read paragraphs of really difficult Korean text to learn about a disgraced Joseon-dynasty era general that in some parts of the country sometimes appears as a diety in shrines to ward off evil spirits because he died angry and had a lot of spiritual power (General Nam Yi, for anyone that cares to check). It is obvious why they chose this text as one of the ones to choose from, and I surely hope the effort I put into this will be worth it.

AI is taking over k-pop visuals and you’re sick of it. Note that the “racially diverse extras” are probably AI generated too these days.

As a proud owner of all four Shin Hana books ™ I cannot wait for the Girls One After 909 book to come out. Just like with k-pop I assess the quality of JAV on a case-by-case basis!

Kpopalypse book spoilers [this asker means it so don’t read the rest of this bit of feedback if you haven’t read the books yet], I own the physical versions of the first three because I like reading on real paper. The actual reason I haven’t finished your books yet is because it seems like Hana relies too much on Caitlyn’s approval (I’ve read through the 2nd book, and flipped through the 3rd). I was annoyed that Hana seemed to have no individual will beyond wanting to keep hooking up with Caitlyn, although perhaps this makes sense as Hana is pretty damaged. Also I thought that Hana/Caitlyn kissing on stage was really unlikely and would not happen in real life, and that yanked me out of the story. I like the books when they theoretically could be real. If two girls did kiss on stage as a fuck you to their company please let me know. The other thing was that the storylines in the 2nd/3rd books seemed less tight than the 1st book, and I thought that there could have been more editing. I loved the 1st book, 2nd was ok, and 3rd I didn’t finish. However, maybe I’m remembering your books incorrectly. I will reread when I have time and then reflect.

Let me know when/if you do read book four as there’s a few developments there that I think might address your concerns re: Hana/Caitlin… a common complaint with the books is that Hana doesn’t develop much as a character but all of those complaints come from people who didn’t read all four of them, remember I’m stretching the character development out over all those books…
