It was just last week that Seoulbeats put out a mixtape about the joys of spring — its warm days, cool nights, and the breeze of change rolling in. Although it is still technically spring, summer-scale heatwaves have seized a good portion of the northern hemisphere, prompting pre-mature AC use and refuge indoors. Looks like we’re in for a record hot summer.
Working in a newsroom, climate change isn’t the only upsetting topic to cross my desk on the daily. Most days, it really does feel like the world is burning regardless of the thermostat. So, this playlist is inspired a little bit by the heat, a little bit from the state of the world, and a lot by the fact that K-pop has a ridiculous number of songs about fire.
The theme may be a little on the nose, but there’s a lot of material to work with. Whether it’s burning anger, the spark of something new, or celebratory fireworks, hopefully this playlist can energize you — even if sometimes it feels like the world is burning.
