Recently, SEVENTEEN‘s Wonwoo announced that he would soon be enlisting in the military come April 2025. The announcement was met with mixed feelings, sparking some backlash about his enlistment.

His situation called into attention the current state of the members’ enlistment, where two out of three military enlistments were public service, and the remaining one exempt. Public service is notably smoother sailing than active duty, but can only be awarded to those with medical exemptions. Complete exemption is an even rarer case.

  • SEVENTEEN has been working to the bone recently going on tour. They’re exerting themselves so hard to earn money, but it’s funny how they’re all exempt or in public service like that.
  • It makes me so disillusioned that kids who are perfectly fine are all in public service instead of active duty. It was indeed amazing of BTS to all enlist in active duty. Why are they in public service in the first place?
  • Why is Wonwoo public service?
  • Out of the three who have to serve, one is exempt and two are in public service.
  • I’m so fascinated by how idols and actors all go to the gym and make it obvious that they are bodybuilding, and showing off while yapping about protein and when you see their what’s in my bag videos, they’re all eating some sort of health supplement. They take better care of their healths than regular folks, but they all get weak suddenly when it comes to the military. Fascinating.

This debate has been ongoing ever since BTS previously enlisted in the military. While exemptions have been ongoing for a long time, it was only really called to attention when some brought up the fact that BTS might be awarded exemptions due to their service to the country’s soft power and honor.
