Over the past few months, G-Dragon’s variety series Good Day has aired globally on Disney+ alongside its Korean terrestrial broadcast. I watched the first episode, but as much as I enjoy G-Dragon as an artist I find his current iteration quite uncomfortable as a TV personality. But even from one episode, I got the gist of the series. After hanging out with a cavalcade of Korean talent, the show would culminate in a big sing-along collaboration. That song arrives today in the form of Good Day 2025.
This recording features (hold your breath) Bigbang’s G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung), 2NE1’s CL, Im Siwan, Kwanghee, Seventeen BSS, DAY6, aespa, Jung Hyung Don, Jung Hae In, Lee Soo Hyuk, Hwang Jung Min, Kim Go Eun, Kian84, Code Kunst, Defconn, Hong Jin Kyung and Ahn Sung Jae. If that line-up isn’t enough to get Good Day 2025 an immediate all-kill on the charts, I don’t know what would be!
The song itself is a mash-up of two 80’s hits by synth-pop duo City Kids (도시아이들), trussed up with modern production techniques and a smattering of hip-hop. There’s much potential in revitalizing 80’s classics in this way and shining a light on a decade of music that isn’t as widely recognized as the post-Seo Taiji K-pop boom. Good Day 2025 feels more like a fun curio than a vital listen, but both songs fit well together and make for an enjoyable excuse for this huge group of artists to come together. And for a listener like me, it’s a welcome chance to hear some 2nd-gen voices (Taeyang, CL) I’ve missed over the past few years.
