Hyomin’s ex-boyfriend, professional soccer player Hwang Ui Jo, has re-entered the spotlight—this time not for his relationship with the T-ARA member, but for his ongoing trial over illegal filming charges.

On July 24, Hwang appeared at the Seoul Central District Court for his second appeal hearing, where he issued an emotional apology and begged for forgiveness.

“I sincerely apologize for my wrongful actions that caused pain to the victims and concern to the public.
I vow to live more responsibly from now on.”
The athlete, who made headlines in 2022 for dating Hyomin, is facing serious backlash. His legal team emphasized that upholding his 1-year suspended jail sentence would destroy his future as a national player, affecting his World Cup eligibility. They even framed Hwang as a victim of privacy violations, claiming the videos were leaked by others.

However, prosecutors weren’t swayed, demanding 4 years in prison, claiming that he initially denied everything, retraumatizing the victims. His remorse only came after indictment and allegedly did not feel sincere.

The victim directly countered Hwang’s plea, submitting a personal statement that declared she would never forgive him. The victim’s legal team also accused Hwang of revealing her identity to the media and falsely claiming she consented to being filmed.

Hwang Ui Jo was indicted for non-consensually filming sexual acts with two different women between June and September 2022. In the first trial, he was found guilty in one case, and acquitted in the other—based on a legal technicality regarding video calls. Both the prosecution and defense have appealed, and the final verdict is scheduled for September 4.
