L5ST are a newly debuted group from Macaroni Media — one of the most enjoyable K-pop company names we’re heard in some time. They’re also set to appear on Abema’s upcoming Re:Born series. I guess being “born” once through debut isn’t enough these days! Their first single Only One sees them tackling a light rock sound.
It’s difficult debuting in such a fast-paced, overstuffed market. Few acts manage to distinguish themselves right off the bat, though this new fifth generation of boy groups has done a pretty good job overall. Only One seeks to paint L5ST in a sentimental light, showcasing vocals and swelling, cathartic melody. The song’s heart is in the right place, but it’s stymied by a lack of ambition and personality. It unfolds like an OST, well-suited for soundtracking tender moments but rather uneventful on its own. The chorus is solid and performed well, but the production feels overly muddy. The entire track needs a kick of energy to bolster its open-hearted emotion.
